Den Series: Louis Armstrong & Modern Jazz

Published 2021-08-27
This screening is part of the Den Series virtual experiences, and it takes a close look at the relationship between Louis Armstrong and Modern jazz. This was one of the first significant generational conflicts in jazz and there are unresolved themes that continue to resonate.

Our discussion will ask what it means to be "Modern" and who gets to decide who is and who is not to be considered in the prized category. What were the generational differences between Louis and the Bebop movement, and how did the press and critical establishment exasperate their divide?
We will present recordings and film footage as we examine the rift and the reconciliation between Louis and Dizzy Gillespie, as well as many other interactions with musicians from this period.

This special presentation is hosted by Hyland Harris and Tatjana Lightbourn--enjoy!

  • I'm a white 63-year-old man. I grew up on listening to Louis Armstrong music and play trumpet today and still play Louis Armstrong music for people from time to time. That was a completely awesome presentation thank you so much. Music knows no color and is not a competition
  • 25 (now 26) likes and no comments yet? Let me be the first to say Thank You Tatjana and Hyland for a commendably thorough and thought-provoking presentation, particularly the linking of Pops and Bird as epochal, world-changing geniuses/soloists, and for reminding us that everything old is new again, and there are only two kinds of music, good and bad.

  • Louis Armstrong is not a traditionalist a modernist a free jazz musician or anything like that he is an Avant Guardian !!! ♥️💙♥️
  • My very worst memory of Gillespie is of the time he cut Louis on TV. You can tell he's doing it on purpose. No Pops, no nothing, young man. He shoulda known better.
