Krakatoa volcano explodes in a spectacular large eruption with a small lateral blast on 17 Oct 2018. The place shown in this video no longer exists: on 22 Dec 2018, the summit cone of Anak Krakatau island, seen here erupting, collapsed into the sea in a massive landslide, triggering a devastating tsunami that killed hundreds of people.
Video was taken during a VolcanoDiscovery expedition to Krakatau from 13-20 Oct 2018. In the afternoon of 17 Oct, a particularly violent explosion occurred as lateral blast that excavated a pit crater beneath the southern lid of the crater, at the same location the September lava flow had overspilled from the crater. By 19 Oct, this new pit had merged with the main crater, enlarging it.

Finally somebody who: - Holds the camera steady - Does not film with a calculator, but just in FULL HD - Does not film in portrait mode Sir - You need a medal for that

The real Krakatoa destroyed itself in 1883! This is the Child of Krakatoa called Krakatau!

Someone give this man a medal for his filming skills 👏

From the title All I can think of is that one episode with squidward as the superhero LOL.

That 1940's outboard motor puttering in the background doesn't exactly inspire confidence of a quick getaway.

This is the best real footage of an actual volcanic eruption I’ve ever seen! Thank you guys!!
  • That's really formidable, amazing! But it's dangerous being so close to an erupting volcano, especially if it's a such tremendous and powerful one like the well-known notorious Krakatau!

I seem to remember reading that the bang of Krakatoa circled the globe three times. Presumably the loudest natural sound in human history.

“Hey that Volcano just erupted” “don’t worry, I know CPR”

Looks amazing!! I’m surprised by the lack of the boom though - so quiet, given the violence
  • Good for them on the camera. Can’t imagine how that must look and feel in person, and how to decide what to frame. Figure that’s about as good of a job as you could do all things considered.

1:15 "Did you see that?" Nahhhh mate was focusing on the pigeon in the other direction, what happened?

I like how now they have continuous live streams set up at the volcanos to capture the initial eruption so that people dont have to think they need to film it current status of yellowstone: fine

If I were filming this, I know I would sound like Arthur and his knights in Monty pythons the holy grail. "Run away, run away".

Krakatoa, referring to Anak Krakatau: "That's my son! I'm so proud of him."

In hindsight you can really see how Anak Krakatau was setting itself up for the collapse and tsunami later that year. The vent system migrated towards the flank that eventually failed with the added material on the flank, plus being on the edge of the 1883 caldera left the whole thing poised to sink. As terrible as the tsunami in December 2018 was, I wish that was caught on camera.
