Fiat Chrysler merges with PSA Group: Stellantis is born | Auto Expert John Cadogan

Published 2021-01-19
Fiat Chrysler has merged with PSA Group and the new entity will be called Stellantis.

Stellantis will become the fourth largest carmaker on Earth, behind Toyota, Volkswagen and Hyundai - but it will be a challenge for Stellantis to survive because it has no sales in China (world's largest car market) as well as massive over-production capacity and commitments with the French Government not to close factories or reduce head count.

I have to say there are reasons, why the merger is logical though: PSA has new platforms & EV technology which FCA need to comply to emissions regulations as well as FCA have luxury brands with high brand recognition which PSA would benefit from. PSA would like to expand its presence in othet countries outside of Europe to reach a larger audience which would lower the production costs which would equate to a higher profit margin. Because FCA has a lot of dealerships in the USA, they could use those. Lastly, PSA's Chef Tavares has proven, that he can flip prands around to profit and make them more desirable. The new Opel Mokka E is sold out in Germany. GM Europe was making losses for the past 20 years but after PSA acquired Opel / Vauxhall, they started becoming profitable.

Amazing to see the ignorance of people outside Europe not knowing about the recent years of PSA. They have been in the top tier for price quality ratio for a few years now, quality shooting up and healthy sales. And I remember this very same YouTuber raving about the DS. Short memory?
  • Good to see they're still moving the deckchairs as the "Titanic" sinks! 😂

Stellantis sounds like something the doctor prescribes you when you no longer find your wife attractive.

Here in Garlicstan (France) I live among die hard Peugeot owners, Citroen too. They would never be seen in the other brand of basically the same car. Then there is dyed in the wool Renault owners, the same applies. Most would not consider a Dacia or Nissan, PSA is their devils spawn. I guess the same blinded brand loyalty was rife in Shitsville, Ford v Holden.

PSA are doing very well at the moment, their new cars are very good in both quality and mechanically. What it also means is a door to the US car market, and PSA has access to the Chinese market due to having a chinese car company as a partner (dongfeng?) and the French government do have an ownership stake of around 13%, the French Government have a larger 15% in Renault.

I heard their new model was going to be called the Uranus to go with their new customer service complaints department.

Chrysler continues their proud heritage as the Village Bicycle. Look who's riding her today......

I'm actually surprized that Stellantis isn't already a name for a Chinese car-brand. Sound like something they would come up with...

"Synergies and economies of scale" is a management euphemism for lots of redundancies from the other divisions.
  • They are worried about selling cars not people's opinions, PSA knows how to sell cars just check what happened when they bought Opel, while with GM the brand sales were shit during all administration in about 2 years PSA brought it back in bussiness

Peugeot 308 won car of the year two years a row. They are visually stunning automobiles. I recently found out that the rear lamps represent tiger claw marks. Up the French! Quality

"peak wank" lol. When John gets his language flowing the imagery is amusing.

Dr Google disgorged the following: "An anagram for Stellantis is "lets in salt", which is great for producing that distinctive, genuine Jeep rust"

Not sure I’d class Peugeot (PSA) as a less attractive proposition then Renault these days. I Might have agreed 10 years ago though. Since 2014 when Peugeot first launched the second gen 308, they have consistently won European car of the year awards for every new vehicle they’ve launched. Quite silly of you to try to have people believe they are rubbish just because they’re not very big in the Australian market! 🙃
  • psa bought opel gm because it caused losses for years, one year was enough to start making profits
