Once a monk said to his elder: ''I feel that I am dead to the world'' His elder calmly looked at him and said: ''If you are dead to the world, take off all of your clothes, go naked to the city and stay there, walking naked amongst the people'' The monk the replied in shock: ''But without clothes the other people will see me naked, will make example of me and mock at me'' And the elder finished: ''Dead people don't need clothes nor care for the mocking of others''

I'm Greek orthodox. I was watching a documentary about the most "hardcore' orthodox monks in Mount Athos, that live with no electricity, with very little food / water etc. One of them was being interviewed, and he said that when he was living in society, he used to love to listen to Ozzy, Scorpions, Iron Maiden etc, and he was playing guitar on a band as a teenager
  • Metalhead to Orthodox pipeline is real and God blesses it. Death to the world. Great video
  • Being eastern orthodox myself I felt so good listening to the Om’s music… and only some time later I found this story and all jigsaws have fallen into place. This is my religion and my music. Peace to you, reader. Let there be no war between us Russians and you all.

Having been a stoner and doom nut for almost 20 years now and just recently found my way to Orothodoxy, this resonates with me. Thank you brother for making this.

I went to my friend's Orthodox church with her and told the father after service "Black Sabbath is why I'm here". He was pretty confused and amused and asked me if he could quote me on that. I was pretty serious, so I said yeah and told him to listen to After Forever when he had the time. Despite listening to Sleep and OM a ton, I had no clue that this was even a thing. The longer I live and look at what's going on around me, the more I want to abandon modern society just and focus on what's important in life. I don't think I can buy into the books 100%, but I can tell you that for me, the teachings and lessons I got from that Orthodox church has definitely been wayyy more beneficial to my well being than the alternatives. Thank you for enlightening me on this. And I must also give thanks to the YouTube botnet for summoning me this video. Love will overcome, brother.
  • I'm Serbian ortodox and this is now something that is well known in punk and metal scene, where many metalheads have inspirations from these ideas and some bands are all about the orthodox message. Good video

I'm a metalhead since teenage years, i drowned myself in slipknot, slayer, korn, in flames, bullet for my valentine, killswitch engage As hardcore atheist I still respected people with different faiths, as I believed this to be the right thing in a world that splits groups wherever possible. Metal was a strong uniting force opposed to what was going on mainstream. Today I'm on my way to orthodoxy. I came from a different route through symbolism, but its heartwarming to see the metal folks again. Yes, retrospectively I'm not really wondering.

Great video! I am a convert to Eastern Orthodoxy, Seraphim Rose brought me to it. I discovered Death to the World shortly after. I play in a Death Metal band. Huge fan of Sleep, OM, and High on Fire. Can't spread the good news enough. All the best brother!

I am almost 46, and I would love to live out the rest of my days in a remote monastery.

I love this video. It combines two things I absolutely love, metal and Orthodoxy. It's also very well made. Thank you so much for making this video and God bless 🙌

I never would have thought my interests in metal and theology would ever collide. But here we are! Very interesting video.

My Nona wanted me to become a Greek Orthodox monk because I didn’t get married. Laughed until I saw this.. might be coming full circle

The undefined punk movement and subsequent goth movement of the 70s and early 80s hinted at this. It was railroaded a different route by the music labels. I was glad to be making copies of DTTW as a Kinkos employee in the 90s. I'm glad I have this to share with my own children now that I'm an unrelatable old man. Господи Иисусе Христе сыне Божий помилуй нас
  • I recently went through a skater/stoner/punk faze a couple years ago and thought i was a rebel, now i have found Christ and the true Church and strive to be a part of the last true rebellion. God Bless you all
  • OM and Wovenhand have brought me back to believing and being a follower of Jesus. As I age its easier to see through all the lies and the snares of the Devil. And I have found more strength in this path. More to the story but not enough time to write it all. Bottom line is I have found peace and supernatural healing through our Lord.

I'm just glad somebody began drawing parallels. Makes perfect sense how a way of life and spirituality would resonate (pun intended) with a certain music genre that depends on low notes. Greetings from Macedonia, a non-recognized Orthodox Christian country.
  • I love reading all these comments from fellow Christians! I’ve been a metal head since I was kid (parents were both into it) and Christianity felt like the lamest thing ever haha. OM (and a pretty crazy mushroom trip) led me down a path back towards real spirituality and lockdown resulted in a final reckoning with God. Reading interviews with Al Cisneros talking about Abrahmic theology genuinely helped me get over that aversion I had to it. Peace and love to all ❤

OM and Sleep are literally 2 music projects I listened to the most through the last years. We’ve seen polish guys from Batushka (now known as Batushka and БАТЮШКА, lol) and other black metal and northern stoner bands try to change the reception of orthodox attributes to be seen as anti-theistic or non-life-performative, as we could say. But OM did something they missed - embraced orthodox traditions and then turned’em up to extreme ascetic sounding music
