The early 1800's were the time of the likes of Jane Eyre, Jane Austin, Brontë sisters, etc. A very poetic and dramatic time in literature. It's like painfully obvious why she chose that decade to anyone who knows even a small amount about history/art/literature... 🙄
  • “The 1830s but without all the racists” That’s basically the pitch for “Bridgerton”. She’s literally saying “when I was a kid I fantasized about living in a fictional version of the past that didn’t exist”, and they’re all reacting as if she didn’t say the last part.
  • Interesting that everyone assumes Swift specifically wants to live in the American South in the 1830s. The world is bigger than that. 🙄
  • @CharlestonTracy
Lyrics right after this lyric “Nostalgia is a mind’s trick if I’d been there I’d hate it” Which completely dismisses all of it.
  • @islandgirl1818
I hate it here! I'm with Taylor and I'm not even a fan like that. This is the most sensitive generation EVERRRRRR and I hate it especially the Internet with all it's losers thinking they matter bc of sosha media 😅
  • @adnanomer9089
She litteraly said "without the racism" in the lyrics. Wtf is wrong with people
  • @stemple19
1830s were known as the Romantic Era. Maybe she's trying to drop an easter egg to her eras tour and people read it the wrong way because she was being too poetic
  • Im black and dont really listen to taylor but i completely understood why she chose the 1830s. Because despite the slavery and women being property the poetry and literature at the time was amazing. Its literally in the album name hello. Context clues.

As a black person, I often thought about the 1920s and 1940s in NY. The time was filled with real talent! From art to movies, music, fashion, literature! Omg. I'd love to sit at a coffee shop and just talk and have REAL conversations about something.

It’s really not that deep. Nobody can convince me Taylor swift is racist based off 2 lines from a song. That word gets thrown around so freely nowadays we can’t even tell what’s an actual attack and what is not.
  • @CactusKitty42
This argument makes no sense to me. She says she would want to live in the 1830’s (as a kid) but without racism and sexism (basically). And then says “Nostalgia is a mind’s trick if I’d been there I’d hate it” Do people just turn their brain off after hearing something slightly controversial?
  • honestly, i think that if she didn't say "without the racism" she would've taken heat for it anyways. it's lose lose

I never thought I'd side with Swift, but somehow those airheads found a way to make it so. 😂

Should have just put it in a book. Reminds me of the woke mob coming for Lana Del Rey. People are so addicted to outrage, it gets clicks, it gives you dopamine hits when people hop on the bandwagon with you, it literally is addictive.
  • @Daisy99999
it should be obvious there is good and bad parts of every decade. people are so dramatic
  • @mariannej3004
As a Swiftie - I completely agree that you have to know the “Taylor lore” before listening to this album. She definitely pulled from other songs and other eras. This is NOT an album for new fans!
  • People also forget that The Old West was a thing during the Victorian era. I guarantee you most of these people aren’t even actually offended. They’re just trynna hop on the clout train. Anything that’s trending..people (who are desperate for viewers) try to jump in and be a part of it so they can get attention.
  • If she hadn’t included that lyric they’d still be calling all her sorts of names. The point of the song is that there’s discontentment any time, you idealize other places and times, long to be anywhere but where you are and truth is you’d be just as miserable.
  • @elliepoyer6344
I can’t believe I’m saying this. I’m not a ‘swiftie’ but some of her songs are cute. However i find it humorous that it is a well known fact - that Miss Swift likes to drop references. The literary movement of the 1830’s is ‘the romantic period’ She has referenced New Romantics or romantics in general in some of her previous work. Considering the title of this new album. It makes sense why she chose that time period as a call back. Some of the most notable titles & stories in history were first published in that time frame. Unless I’m just overthinking this & you can add me to the girls gone bonkers group.
  • I love Victorian architecture and I LOVE old ball gowns, I wish those could make a rereturn, but that doesn't mean I'm clamoring for all the other stuff involved with that era. If I could make a Frankenstein of every generation I would
