MONSTER FISH From 105 FEET OF WATER! (River Fishing)

Published 2022-05-12
Fishing deep water is pretty cool, partially because I don't get to do it much, and partially because you never know what lives down there.

Back in the ‘50’s and’60’s, fishing was a means of both having a great time and procuring food for our family. We always had a freezer full of bass, white perch, (crappie), catfish and various types of bream. Recently, I heard a report from the wildlife and fisheries telling folks not to eat any fish caught in our local lakes, streams and rivers. The fish are full of mercury and other really bad things. That report just broke my heart. It still baffles my mind to watch catch and release videos. Without having wild game and fish to eat, my family would have been much harder pressed for food. Daddy always had a good job so we wouldn’t have starved but life would have been very stale without our outdoor activities. The idea of catching fish to then just release them would have never crossed our minds. It would be like hunting with high powered air soft rifles. To us, that would have been a waste of time and money. I was two days old when Daddy first took me fishing. Momma came along at first but after two weeks, Daddy declared that I had been moddley coddled enough. He would load up my bottles, formula, diapers and clothes, pick me up and then we went to the swamps. He would lay a blanket down on the floor of the boat, (lower deck for my brother Navy vets), prop an umbrella up over me to protect me from the sun and then start talking to me while he fished. I would kick and play with my toes while absorbing his wisdom. Daddy often bragged that I caught more largemouth bass by the time I was ten years old then most men would catch in their lifetime. He let me run wild through the swamps, day and night. We hunted squirrels, deer and coons for the most part, (he raised champion coon dogs), and often spent the days fishing and the nights coon hunting. Water was never a problem because we could drink straight from the various streams and creeks in our area. After breakfast, Daddy would send me out with my BB gun to kill enough birds for our lunch. It’s been over two decades since I’ve been fishing or hunting and, although I miss it at times, I’ve come to the conclusion that what I really miss are those days in the swamps with Daddy. He was an old WWll vet who believed in education. If my grades didn’t meet his approval, he would make me stay home and study until they were straight A’s. Sorry for the rambling post but thank you for allowing an old man the opportunity to take a walk down memory lane. Keep catching ‘em, ( and take a few home for supper now and then if they are safe to eat.)

I’m reminded of two guys in Louisiana in 1992 that feel out of the boat with waders on. They never had a chance. A little catfish slime and skipjack guts won’t hurt you. Be careful with those waders. I fish for big cats on the Tennessee and the Mississippi. I live south of Memphis. The Mississippi is to be respected like no other. You would not last 10 seconds in it with those waders. I’ve seen guys throw anchors in the Mississippi and sink their boat. As soon as the anchor connects to the bottom, the current is so strong it will whip that boat around and pull the front of your boat down and fill it with water. Anyway, I’m sure y’all have plenty of experience
  • @djomegaminus
