The only weird thing about humanoid pokemon is how fast people can draw lewd art of it right after their announcement.

I think it's more or less how the games treat them as natural animals, so when the games treat them as animals/pets, and the more human they look the more awkward it makes it really awkward to think of them as such, but this is just my thoughts
  • Personally, I dislike Incinaroar more because I feel like the evolution came out of nowhere rather than it being “humanoid”. Popplio was a baby seal, then as it kept evolving, it became more and more beautiful. Befitting of a pop idol/mermaid. It also helps that mermaids and seals have similar shaped tails ignoring that a mermaid’s is usually scaled. Rowlet and Dartrix both used their grass type moves as “arrows”, which makes Decidueye being an archer feel more believable. And archers usually have amazing eyesight which is also shared by birds of prey in order to hunt their prey. just can’t figure out how we get from baby cat to larger cat to wrestler/heel tiger.

I think one big issue people have is that they could be seen as oversaturated in recent generations, especially when it comes to the starters. In generation 8, all three starters could be seen as humanoid, and since a lot of people have issues with these types of designs, they end up not being able to connect with any of the starters. Although I don’t personally mind humanoid Pokémon, I still would prefer if there was more variety when it comes to things like starters
  • I've never really minded more humanoid pokémon, but I can understand why people don't like them. The only one I have a problem with is Incineroar, mainly because I don't like it as part of Litten evolution line, if it was it's own individual pokémon it would be fine.
  • I think humanoid Pokemon are pretty cool. Throughout the series Pokemon have been seen to have some pretty high intelligence, when I see a humanoid Pokemon it makes me think “humans are Pokemon are a lot more similar than we think” or something along those lines.
  • Yokai are Japanese monsters, who include:
    -Objects
    -Humanoids
    -Ferals
    -Incomprehensible Horror

So it only makes sense that the Pocket Monster series would take heavy inspiration from Yokai.
  • As someone who prefers more draconic or monstrous looking Pokémon, the hate revolving around humanoid Pokémon is really stupid tbh. They're not my thing, but I don't mind them either. Besides, they're monsters. They don't have to look like straight up animals.

My only issue is that when the 3rd stage doesn’t match the other 2 like. Like how Incineroar stood on 2 legs when the previous 2 were on 4
  • The devs noted that Greninja and Gardevoir are popular, so they made more of that. Simple as that. Same way they made more of Pikachu.
    Nice video ofc.

Humanoid Pokémon really aren't that bizarre and unnatural for the franchise. Like, a mountain of trash, a literal sphere with eyes that explodes, and sentient pastries are considered Pokémon, so I don't see how more humanoid designs are unsuitable for the series. Even real life animals like primates and bears share some features with humans.
  • I actually really appreciate your perspective. The fact that you have a degree in this sort of thing kind of makes me more curious about it.

That said, Humanoid designs don't necessarily bother me. But sometimes it does seem like certain Pokemon don't need to be humanoid; if that makes any sense.
  • @EmperorTyrael
There once were Pokemon who married people.
There once were people who married Pokemon.
This was a normal thing because long ago people and Pokemon were the same.
  • Last night I watched a "did you know gaming" video where they mentioned a fact by one of the developer/designers that they specifically made Blaziken humanoid in shape to push the boundaries..
if I'm recalling correctly essentially if you know painted chicks are (baby chickens, not girls) he said part of it was to represent the "disappointment" of a cute fluffy chick growing into a "feisty" thing that's "hard to look at".
So the humanoid design is not a new thing, and it has its roots. Gen 3 was essentially gonna be a Gen 5 type of game til the last minute, so they really tried to push the envelope with some designs in that generation at least.

Plus if you were a 4th gen player you'll remember the reference to pokemon and people "eating at the same table"... some connotations left to others.

It fits into the lore overall imo
  • I think people really forget that Pokémon are not Animals, They Monsters. Not to mention humanoid Pokémon have been in this series since time.

Honestly, I don't really care about the more humanoid designs, even outside of Fighting and Psychic types, and limiting yourself to just stylized animals doesn't seem all that appealing to me. I do like some variety in the designs.
  • Personally I haven't had an issue with some of the humanoid designs. I enjoyed Delphox's design a lot for example since it really does feel like a mage of sorts and makes it explain why it's now a fire/psychic type and as someone who can appreciate good character design, it helps in that factor
  • I feel like the biggest issue with humanoid Pokemon is that game freak has push for humanoid Pokemon to be the mascots of the franchise. Making them into starters and even granting them more events and special move sets, an example of this preference were the mega evolutions, essentially nearly all humanoid pokemons at the time got mega evolutions and yet Gen 2 starters didn't...the reason is obvious.

This also means that game freak been a companny seen as they have struck gold will push for more and more humanoid pokemon designs, while sidelining the more animalistic pokemon.
  • I have a personal gripe with mostly incineroar, mostly for how sudden its evolution jump is, it goes from cat to bigger cat. Straight to machoke
