Magnum: Britain's melodic hard rock veterans.

Published 2024-01-31
I talk about the British band Magnum and how I feel they're underrated. I also talk about the 5 albums I have and also include song samples. I tried to be cute with the avatar I don't think it looks to good haha. I'll keep it though.

Here is the video I mentioned of Tony and Bob talking about some of their music videos:

Nice to see one of our friends from across the pond appreciating Magnum. They never managed to break over there, despite a concerted effort by Polydor in the late 80's (even drafting in Russ Ballard to co-write a radio friendly hit - Rockin' Chair). Sadly, as Tony was the sole songwriter for the entirety of the band's 52 year career, Here Comes The Rain will be the end of the road. I would highly recommend trying to pick up a copy of the Living The Dream DVD (20th anniversary of On A Storyteller's Night live performance). Keep your night light burning! Ian (Magnum fan of 45 years, and 123 live shows)

I was lucky enough to play in the support band for a pre-tour warm up gig they did in the Highlands many years ago. You'll never meet a nicer bunch of guys. RIP Tony Clarkin

Thanks for this review - those three albums (On A Storytellers Night, Vigilante & Wings Of Heaven) are just sublime - one of the best trilogies of albums ever. Thanks for mentioning the song Dont Wake The Lion - such an epic track - probably my favourite Magnum song. That said check out the song Stormy Weather from their Sleepwalking album - could also be my fav Magnum song - amazing. I saw them live 3 times - 1985, 1986 and 1988 - in Northern Ireland. They came here during 'The Troubles' which was big and brave of them.

Magnum does not have a bad album. 23 studio, many compilations and sets, and many live albums - ALL great! By the way the new album is awesome! Fantastic musicians. Tony wrote the words, produced the albums so the albums sound great and he was the lead guitarist. Bob Catlay delivers great vocals, the drumming, keyboards and bass are also crystal clear on every album. Great, great, great band! You nailed what Magnum is in this video.

This was a band I always meant to check out and for a while I thought they were a power metal band because of their album covers would suggest so 😅 thanks for this
  • I saw them open for Ozzy and the Blizzard, in Fayetteville, NC...check out the album 'Chase the Dragon.' You won't be disappointed.

Prog......I think they failed as a band if you like prog, some bands went soul in the 80's not hard rock. Well at least Bowie and genesis went soul.
