I can't post a link to the movie because of copyright issues, but if you look hard enough you can find it. I would highly recommend watching it.

My wife says the Shaggy joke at the beginning isn't funny. Is she right, or is she a hater?
  • @KremBotop
The recent rollout of lost media findings have been nothing short of impressive

Slight correction, Gandy didn't create the 3d animated Clone Wars that you show on screen, he created a series of 2D shorts, also titled Clone Wars.

I never understood the hate for the live action movie. What more could you want? The actors WERE the characters. To a one they were the absolute embodiment of the characters. Williams pulls off the performance of a lifetime. The visual design is jaw dropping, somehow making it actually LOOK like the cartoon. Yeah, the story is a little weak, but I mean, the cartoons were about "sailor man eats spinach, sailor man beats up bully", so any story at all is a step beyond. Maybe the critics could just look at Popeye's personal motto. I yam what I yam. This looks like it would have been cool, though. Maybe not as a giant budget theatrical release, but certainly for something like Netflix. I'd have watched it for sure.

You know, with the success of animation and games like Cuphead, I would think this would have worked. Maybe that's just me being optimistic, but with the whole resurgence of classic/classic style cartoons, I feel like Popeye could have at least had a chance.

I don’t think you can write Popeye off as a relic of the past. I was born in the ‘90s. There was ZERO new and shiny Popeye stuff for me to watch in a modern style. And yet, Popeye was always my favorite cartoon as a kid watching him on Boomerang. If I remember correctly, that was the Famous Studios ones that I was watching — definitely older than the ‘60s Hanna-Barbera style, but they were in color. So, my point being, that if I was a kid who was 60 years removed from the cultural context and still loved those old Popeye shorts, then the same could happen today if you just put the character in front of kids. That 3D proof of concept short would absolutely pass with kids today I think. If you want to see similar projects, you’ve got Scoob! and Tom & Jerry, so that’s what you’re competing with

I believe someone in the production team leaked it in an attempt to get people talking with the hopes of getting the project revived. It worked for Deadpool after all.

Man, the fact that this movie was never fully made proves that we are living in the darkest timeline
  • He actually only made the 2003 series "Clone Wars." The Clone Wars wouldn't come out til around 5 years later and he had little to nothing to do with it, but great video nonetheless

It's a shame that the Popeye movie never got fully completed. Thankfully, a new studio is remaking the movie at the moment.

Gennedy Tarkovsky needs justice. From Cartoon Network and then this. And for someone so impactful on a lot of childhoods . I don’t get why they can’t be allowed to freely create
  • Classic Cartoon characters like Popeye and Betty Boop deserve so much more than they're getting these days. The fact that both were so close to getting their own animated movies made but failing right before the finish line is so sad. People love these characters, and more kids would too if they were given proper exposure, beyond memes and clips trending on Twitter, through projects made by people like Genndy who respect them and their place in animation history. Maybe one day they'll get their ideal movies finally made, but with how the industry has shifted towards superheroes and cinematic universes, I don't see that anytime soon.

RIP to all of the wonderful pieces of animation, some of the loveliest and greatest cartoons to come out in recent years, that HBO just completely axed. A few of the shows are outright being erased from other platforms - including YouTube. Meaning that the only way people will be able to watch shows like Infinity Train, Mao Mao, OK KO, and many other is through piracy A dark week this has been animation

Popeye is outstanding, there is a reason everytime his character is done well he becomes a cultural sensation. The thing about Popeye that this guy seems to get that others don't, is just how much the stories are about love, kindness, and understanding. It's like this egg roll filled with warm gooey heart, and joy, wrapped in the wanton wrapper of masculinity and adventure. It's beautiful.
  • I really wanted to see this movie. Popeye was huge in the 80's and it would've been fun to see him come back. I applaud the balls it took to incur Warner's wrath in posting this animatic.
  • Thank you for touching on the "Popeye was canceled for Emoji Movie" myth! I don't like Emoji Movie as much as the next guy, but people spreading that around really bothered me
  • @aruce9
This project BEGS a reanimated project. I saw this movie or at least part of it and I loved what I saw. Tom Kenny did a pretty good job as popeye. It is a huge shame that this movie never saw the light of day officially because I would’ve loved to pay to see this.
  • This all just makes me think...how many animated movies, existing only in animatic form, are there out there that have just never been released to the public? And I don't just mean cancelled films, but also earlier versions of movies that have been completed and released. This animatic was finished in 2013, and like you said, it may very well have been completely different by the time the film got canned. Animated films often change a lot during production, so it wouldn't surprise me if there was an entire world of "animatic movies" that nobody even knows about.

for anybody who doesn't know, "chip butty" is a british slang term for a sandwich consisting of two slices of buttered (hence the "butty" part) bread, and chips (fries/maybe steak fries for USians) in the middle. chip butties are usually looked down upon because they're a quick, cheap and usually greasy food (since in my experience chip butties are usually made with takeaway (takeout in US english) chips, which are usually very greasy) and are associated with the lower class (in a negative way, because rampant english classism y'know). btw, sandwiches in britain (or at least england) are usually made by buttering the bread first (unless it's made with something spreadable like jam (jelly in US english), or if it's store-bought). just thought it was interesting that such a channel name was connected to the animatic.

I miss when professional cartoon voice actors voices major motion picture cartoons. Hell, now Disney won’t even release cartoon series anymore without putting celebrities in the cast. Like that new Duck Tales cartoon. Sure, some of them are good, but let’s face it, professional cartoon actors would be better at it.
