This is a day in the life of the indigenous SƔpara tribe who live within the Ecuadorian Amazon.

Today, their population totals less than 700 people, across 22 communities, and they are constantly battling to keep their culture, traditions and territory in-tact in an ever pressing capitalist world.

The SĆ”para, also known as ZĆ”para or ZĆ”paro, once occupied some 12,000 miĀ² between the Napo River and the Pastaza in the Amazon rainforest along the border of Ecuador and Peru.

Early in the 20th century, there were some 200,000 Zapara. From the year 2009 on the Ecuadorian ZĆ”para call themselves SĆ”para. The official name is NaciĆ³n SĆ”para del Ecuador (NASE).

The SƔpara people have a distinct language, known as SƔpara, which is considered critically endangered with only a few fluent speakers remaining. They have a unique cosmology that revolves around their close relationship with the natural world, viewing themselves as an integral part of the forest ecosystem.

They possess extensive knowledge of the medicinal properties of plants and have a profound understanding of the intricate balance of the rainforest.

However, the SƔpara people face numerous challenges, including encroachment on their lands by extractive industries, deforestation, and the loss of their cultural heritage. Despite these pressures, the SƔpara people continue to fight for their rights, seeking recognition and protection of their territory, language, and way of life. Efforts are being made to preserve their culture and support their sustainable practices, ensuring the survival and well-being of the SƔpara people and their unique contributions to the world.

  • Huge support for those people that tries to protect their culture. It breaks my heart to see them fighting just to not be erased from this earth.
  • As an indigenous person from India, sending the community great luck and prosperity.
  • @charliechan6827
My heart goes out to these people. May God keep them safe from harm. Greetings and prayers from the USA.

These kinds of interactions are exactly the reason I started following Gareth so many years ago. I love being able to see deeper inside a community by someone who respects and embraces traditions. Arenā€™t these human experiences what we all hope to get from travelling? Awesome vid!
  • @ezacalzada
That conversation with the young man (father) was so deep and meaningful. Hope this reaches more viewers and audience. Nature is our mother indeed and we have to take care of her as she grows older. ā¤

Thank you for using your skills as a story teller to provide a voice to others. I remember watching your videos 12 years ago as you were starting this path. I connected with your message of connecting with folks when you travel as I shared the same values and was at the same stage of enjoying traveling and connecting with those I met. To watch your journey then to now has been such a wild ride and an opportunity for me to continue "traveling". Looking forward to watching your continued growth and progress with whatever you decide!
  • As someone who has had a number of similar experiences in the Oriente (amazon region) of Ecuadpr visiting indigenous communities I think you succeeded in conveying the special quality of their lives living sustainably in the rainforest. In order to protect the rainforest from more depredations of corporate interests it is essential that the rights of indigenous communities be upheld and protected.. Through videos like this one people can get a good sense of what sustainable living is all about not only in the tropical rainforest but in general.
  • Dude, what an experience - life changing for the soul šŸ™ I accidentally came across your channel and have been watching your videos most of the evening. Much love from the UK šŸ‡¬šŸ‡§
  • Gareth, this is a masterpiece. I loved it. Thank you for taking us to our native land and with amazing people who all they wish for, is to be left in peace. You are awesome!šŸ™Œ

Thank you for this video. I can feel you genuinely connected with the people you stayed with.
  • Gareth, amazing video! I love seeing the daily lives of different cultures. You really dive deep into all the aspects of their lives. I love it! Love your positive vibes and down to earth nature. The people in this community, young and old, really accepted you and had fun with you. Keep the content coming! You need your own TV show!
  • @mariesimangan2363
My first time watching you. My first time EVER leaving a comment out of countless of documentaries I have stumbled upon or purposely watched on YOUTUBE. I know I needed to curb out time to leave you with one because Iā€™m so glad I came across your video and therefore your channel. I will be watching all your videos in your library and canā€™t wait to travel deeper with you!! I know there are a lot of travel bloggers out there, but something about the way you convey and engage and communicate with the locals that captivates your viewers. You are humble and grateful to be part of their culture and their home and it shows. Thanks for sharing your passion, talent, and interests.
  • @souravislam6432

FIne, fine work ā¤ Your heart for people always comes through in your respect and immersion in their world. Since discovering your work in the last year, the "daily life" type videos (before they had that name :D) were our favorites. Your curiosity combined with gentle education makes these pieces unique to anyone else out there. Thanks for the excellent work- to you and your team. Looking forward to all to come!
  • I just saw your video out 2 hours ago. Garrett what an emotional video. This video here is where it all started. You are just so genuine, you are likable, I believe you have a beautiful heart, and with that comes great responsibility as cheesy at that sounds, good people go through hard lessons in life. Your video came at a time when I am also having medical issues so is a family member, and when you said to be your own advocate, to not take No as an answer, it motivated me to not take NO, to not wait. To self love. I love your videos, and overthought I dont know you, I love you too comrade of earth, my cosmic brother.
