■About me
Hi, I’m Nao. I was born in Yokohama and grew up in a Buddhist temple in the countryside of Hyogo prefecture. Life in urban and rural areas and unique experiences in a temple can bring other perspectives on Japanese things.

Thank you, Nao. I'll be travelling to Japan for the first time in 3 days! Looking forward to being there.

Thank you for taking the time to make this video. It was very helpful in knowing what to bring!
  • We are in Japan for the last 15 days for tour and this video has been really helpful. Especially in the month of May, dressing in layers is important as temperature can change throughout the day. Thanks Nao.

BRING TWO SUITCASES!!! Even if you only need one. I somehow always find a way to fill up the 2nd empty suitcase with things I buy in Japan…

For the plug adapter, most of us in the US will have a 3 prong plug for our laptops. A lot of hotels did not have a 3 prong plug. So we had to go to Daiso, they sell a 2 prong extension which does not have the 3rd prong, but it has a 2 prong which will slip onto the plug and allow you to plug into the outlets in Japan. It's a little white adapter they sell.

Thank you for the great advice! One detail, Westerners often sweat/stink more for genetic reasons so I’ve heard we need to bring our own deodorant (edit: antiperspirant) because it’s a lot stronger 😅

While not as universal, instead of dealing with the bulk of travel adapters in addition to my regular chargers, I just bought a Japanese USB charger and power cable appropriate for my laptop's power brick on the first day. Makes the everyday setup a little bit easier.

I will be in Japan for 2 weeks in early June and have been watching all your videos to prepare, thank you for your work Nao :) Do you have any recommendations on sunscreen or bug spray that I can buy in Japan? I assume it will be quite hot and humid 🥵

I think all english speakers should start saying "shoozies". That is so much more fun. hahaha

Thank you again for your informative and detailed explanations! Could you please explain the very restrictive Air Conditioning system in Japanese hotels? It doesn't seem to let you set your own temperature (our experience in March), even though it has such a display 😢

Just little things. Suica or Pasmo card (everyone forgets the Pasmo 😕) Also, eSims are becoming easier to get, so you don't have to get a physical card from the airport and can be done on-line before you get there 😀
  • It will be my first time mid May! What do you suggest for dressing for the weather? Light layers? Thanks! 😊
