“Slap in the face”: New Brunswick tenants evicted for demolition, units then posted for higher rent

A resident of Sackville, N.B. was shocked to see their former apartment listed for rent at a higher price after being told the building would be demolished.

“Those notices were served on my door. I was at work. I got a text of a picture of my door with those pages, and they clearly stated, ‘We’re demolishing the building,'” said Karlie Rheaume.

They and their neighbours were given only a month to find housing and scrambled to find new places to live that was within their budget — not an easy feat in the current housing market.

How is that not against the law? New Brunswick should be ashamed.

all the crap out there about bad tenants...but nothing about bad landlords..they are more of them than you think
  • We have to ENSURE safe housing for all Canadians, it's by far the best military strategy.

ok, landlord expect us to believe she evicted her tenant and ready to demolish, without even checking she needed rezoning, which the most basic knowledge for anyone wanting to convert single family house to multi units🤣
  • @newlife956
I guess landlords believe that tenants should move out every time there is an appreciation in housing and rental prices.....making the VICTIMS of speculation pay for that speculation. GREED...plain and simple...and the lame excuses/pretexts for eviction.....SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED!

Lazy sloppy government is making it difficult for both good tennats and good landlords. Bad government is helping bad tenants and bad landlords.

Only one solution - own your own property.
  • @putasinghh
Its not their home ,, what would have happened was they would have stopped paying rent , the home owner would have lost money , and would never be able to rent out at what the market is actually at ,, the rules need to be changed on both sides not fair to anyone

If only homes were affordable to the point we could own the roof over our heads. The further we move into the future the more I want to go back in time. It's like walking into a nightmare knowing what's ahead.

you can evict if you are going to live in it yourself or rebuild. landlord would have had to research the zoning before evicting the tenants. They just see an opportunity to raise the rents in their little ghetto building and kicked everyone out. this tenant has a case
  • seems like a judge would reverse the eviction if possible and award all moving and court costs and possibly punitive damages to the renters.
  • Landlords need to increase rent or they can’t survive. It is a math issue.
