Surgery Day for Your Child; an Arkansas Children's Hospital Video for Parents

Published 2020-09-11
THE CHILDREN'S ANESTHESIA PROCESS EXPLAINED

There are numerous excellent videos about a child's surgery day available for kids to view. This video from Arkansas Children's Hospital is different. It's for PARENTS' information and is not meant for children. It contains a far more detailed explanation and demonstration of the pediatric anesthesia process, including all the activities inside the operating room. Our
purpose is to reassure parents about the safety of that process and to assure you that care is taken to see that your child feels safe, unafraid and well cared for. Please be aware that this video contains scenes showing O.R. procedures being performed on a sleeping child, which may be disturbing for small children to view. Parental discretion is thus strongly advised.

All of my surgeries in a children’s hospital took place in Michigan at the Children’s Hospital in Detroit. My first surgery I did not use the mask because I don’t know if they were available back in 1980. However, in 1982 they were available my first surgery 1980 was a cordial transplant that kept me in there for a week. I remember whole lot of that the good the bad in the in between. I had been to this hospital between 1980 and 1982 and every time that I was there, really weird things would happen so when I was told to come for a surgery in 1982, I cried my eyes out in the waiting room. The only thing that helped calm me down in my version of child life back, then was the LED display on the digital thermometers of the day. Every time afterward, when I would come, my parents would make it sound like a really big event, emphasizing the cherry balloon or the cherry mask. Cherry would be my flavor of choice for all of my surgeries that were to come in the next year. I hated waking up, and I hated waking up with the IV in my hand. in 1991, I had more eye surgery and this time when I started to breathe in the mask, I actually felt really good about getting high off of the gases in the mask. I never would’ve thought that I would have anything to do with children’s Hospital Michigan as an adult but I volunteered there for a couple of years well was finding work. I interviewed for several positions in a lot of the neighboring hospitals that were around children’s Hospital, but never any posit at Children’s Hospital itself.
  • My first time undergoing general anesthesia was when I had outpatient surgery in early 2011. I bravely went through it

I had surgery as a child and I wish I had been prepared this well! They also didnt do the "flavored" air or mask. They preferred you were completely asleep and my Mom was not brought back to the OR.

I would recommend if they have a Nintendo switch that will make a HUGE difference and I had my phone. I would recommend a phone or tablet with pictures of family and friends. I had a video of my 2 year old niece which put me at ease

  • I had surgery on my eyes on march 10 2022 and I was so scared about it during the surgery I didn’t feel anything because I was asleep and when I woke up my eyes were red so I had to stay home for a few days as my eyes are healing and it was for my lazy eyes so I had to get surgery on it

I'm surprised how many children prefer starting anesthesia via mask vs IV. When I was a kid, needles were unpleasant, but not terrible for me. I saw Monsters Inc. and the "scream extractor" terrified me to the point that I was scared of having a surgery, simply because I didn't want a mask with a big tube on my face. Fortunately, I was allowed to choose to start anesthesia via IV.
