Just a rant on EDC’s Victorinox vs Leatherman

Published 2023-10-07
I both agree and disagree with Aaron from ‪@gideonstactical‬ regarding the Victorinox Cadet.

Just a few thoughts on people’s expectations, some purists don’t even want to consider carrying a keychain multitool or think it is a fair comparison.

I think that for those who want more out of their edc can carry 2 different pockets knives/multitools in their pockets. I even carry a full size leatherman in my backpack, and there’s also one in my glove compartment.

Who made up the rule, that you can only have one. Why choose it you don’t have to?

Thanks for sharing, kind of interesting debate. I rarely need pliers when out and about so a tinker or just a blade suffice - currently CRKT Pilar slipjoint, in the UK.

The small driver on Victorinox's can opener is also a 2 dimension phillips driver. I learned that not long ago and I tried it and it works very good. Some people said it works on torx but I never tried that.

I love to pair my Cadet with the Leatherman Style PS. Perfect complimentarity with nearly zero overlap in tools. Only 3.2 ounces together (with the bit holder added to the Style) that's less all the other options.

SAK standard Tinker & a Knipex plier. Lighterbro has tiny scissors on it.

Handyman FTW!!! I have Charge+, Deluxe Tinker, Handyman, Rebar. I like Handyman the most for light jobs, for Hard Charge + is more handy. Handyman is my pocket carry , easily.
  • Whenever people in the knife community whine about a certain steel spec. It tells you they haven't actually used it and they also don't understand sharpening (there's quite a number of things you can do to improve edge retention with a softer steel while barely hindering cutting performance and it is a blessing to be able to sharpen it on any stone or file or coffee mug) While there's definitely merits to super steels, there's also merits to simple tool steels, especially for the beginner. And victorinox steel is universally loved, being a bit soft but taking a lovely edge and quickly. Well.. they use Krupp marine/surgical steel 0.11441 (don't remember the number code entirely) Which is the equivalent to 420J If you say you've got a knife in 420J people are gonna laugh their asses off at you, it's not even a 440A, it's not even 420HC.

If the micra scissors were any good at all victorinox would be obsolete. The problem lies in the fact that if you want a nice tool setup on a victorinox they become so thick! Substantially thicker than the skeletool and larger leathermans. Call me a leatherman fan boy, but I don't understand people who say things like "I don't need an expensive big heavy leatherman" and then carry a cybertool, deluxe tinker, or champ for $50-90. For me, anything bigger than a two layer victorinox becomes impossible to fit in tool pouches or little edc setups. Good knives, bad multitools.
