Simple chemistry dictates that when adding vinegar to baking soda you neutralize the solution an create one that is neutral in pH. Just because there is fizzing that occurs doesn’t mean that your cleaning it, it just means your creating a neutralization reaction. The reason the smell might go away is because plain unreacted baking soda neutralizes odors.

Baking soda and vinegar shouldn't really work as the baking soda will neutralize the acid in the vinegar, that's what the foaming is when you spray the vinegar on, the baking soda is neutralizing the acid in the vinegar and it's the acid that kills the germs.
  • mix bottle (1/2) water, distilled vinegar(1/4) add drops of dwan detergent- spray area--then sprinkle baking soda on surface--draws out stain and orser and vacuums up better.

Baking soda and vinegar are a bubbling combination, BUT those bubbles are not doing any deep cleaning. The risk: Wasting your money. Baking soda is basic while vinegar is acidic, their reaction produces water and sodium acetate.

My son threw up in the carpet and I washed it with soapy water, now it stinks of that wet, damp, smell. Help anyone. Should I wash the bicarbonate soda out or vacuum it?
  • Always blot the spot first, then dump on baking soda ONLY. The baking soda will neutralize as well as absorb the liquid and even help to deodorize. The worst thing to do is to over wet as that will only drive the malodour in deeper and be even more difficult for a professional carpet cleaner to fix later. Do the above baking soda thing , let it completely dry and vacuum. Then... call a professional. They have the right equipment, chemicals and procedures to save your carpets. I’ve been a professional carpet cleaner for over 30 years. Isn’t spending even a couple of hundred dollars to save your carpets worth it? Carpets can be a huge investment. If your carpets are not worth calling a professional carpet cleaner and you just can’t stand the smell then rip them out and start from scratch. If you panicked and soaked the carpets and drove the pee all the way right into the sub floor you will need to seal the sub floor before installing new carpets and (of course) change the under-pad at least the section that has become contaminated. Any carpet retailer will be able to match the under-pad type and thickness.

Never use any of this on cat urine, or hot water. You have to neutralize cat pee. I've only found one thing that works but it gets worse before it gets better. My Pet Just Peed is a game changer. Go read up on it, you'll thank me later.

There was no real resolution to the urine carpet. Why is this on "Fix This"? Nothing was fixed. She did give her opinion of which combo was the best of the non working ideas, but fixed nothing. That's crap.
