The Danish Heavy Metal icons Mercyful Fate formed in Copenhagen in 1981 after the dissolution of the band Brats, and during a short span of four years, they changed our perception of metal. They released one EP (Mercyful Fate)and two Full-Length LP's (Melissa and Don't Break The Oath) They were fronted by the charismatic King Diamond that laid his falsetto vocals over the riffs from the dynamic duo of Hank Shermann and Michael Denner and Timi Grabber and Kim Ruzz kept the rhythm. So in todays video we're going to take a deep dive into the early career of one of the greatest metal bands of all time, Mercyful Fate. Enjoy!

King Diamond fan from mid 80's to now. I named my Daughter Abigail almost 22 years ago and she recently asked me, Dad, did you name me after a demon baby who ate her way out of her Mother? I said that's not even the weird part Abby, you were born on Kings Birthday. She said how did you guys manage that? and I replied "Fate"
  • I listened to Mercyful Fate when I was 14 years old, I listen to Mercyful Fate today at 54 years old and I will listen to Mercyful Fate when I'm 94 years old! Timeless and never EVER gets old! 🤘🏻😎

Shermann and Denner. One of the best guitar duo's in metal.
  • There was always something that felt different about Mercyful Fate compared to all the other metal bands out during that time. A pure metal classic.

Mercyful Fate to me is the most creative band of that era, imo. What goes on in terms of structures, modulations, chord progressions, use of modes, etc. will never stop to amaze me. And King Diamond's voice is just completely wild and unique. Thanks, dude.

My first impression about Mercyful fate was I have never listened a band like this, the guitars amazing and the Voice was different at all. That was deep love for this band since the beginning.

I got Melissa when it was new, based on the album cover alone. Had never heard of them before. Put it on (cassette!), and I still remember being just mesmerized by Evil. This album honestly scared me, as it was the first album that sounded genuinely satanic to me. I definitely felt like I was doing something wrong by listening to it, which was part of the appeal, of course! This became “my” band that I would listen to alone, nobody else. Like with Iron Maiden I could play it around friends. But not MF, that was my private band.

I saw Mercyful Fate in Hollywood at the Palladium . Before the show we were walking around and in a Record store they were signing autographs and meeting fans. So I quickly purchased The Oath and met the band they signed it and I shook King Diamonds hand . I still have the record , Awesome Metal memory.

To me, Mercyful Fate will always be Michael Denner and Hank Sherman on guitars. They had such creativity in their leads and chemistry on how they composed music. Don't Break The Oath remains my all time favorite since I first bought the record in 1985.

I remember as a kid being in a music store and trying to decide between Metallica's "Kill 'em All" and Mercyful Fate's "Melissa" as I used to buy albums if they looked metal. I purchased them both that day and was glad I did. "Melissa" is my favorite of Fate's early recordings. So damn epic and timeless.

Can’t agree more about those albums. Doesn’t matter how old I get, when I revisit them I get hype. They flat out rock.
  • The best era of one of the best Metal bands of all time. Melissa and Don't Break the Oath are universal masterpieces. I remember many nights during my late childhood and tennage years when I was going to sleep drunk, singing all theses songs. Favorites: Curse of the Pharaohs, Satan's Fall, Melissa, Desecration of Souls and Night of the Unborn.
  • "How they constructed the riffs was purely magical". Amen to that! Those early Mercyful Fate are filled with so many amazing riffs! Lesser bands would have mined just one or two of the riffs and made a whole song out of it. But Mercyful Fate will throw hundreds of them in one song!
  • I discovered MF and KD last year around August, and these two bands are literally the best in my opinion. I can listen their music all day! I remember the First song of Mercyful Fate I heard was A Dangerous Meeting, i was literally shocked how I could never try to listen Mercyful Fate. The song is so perfect and I listened it everyday and then I discovered all the other albums from them and Melissa is my most favorite Album atm! Really sad that I discovered them last year and not earlier. But its never too late!

Mercyful fate is one of my top 5 bands of all time! Long live the king!

🤘My band Serpent’s Knight was very fortunate to know King prior to their first US show in Portland 10/20/84. It was supposed to be on the 19th with Slayer but US customs screwed up due to the stage gear/props. We hung out with Slayer and MF at a signing days before and after the show, and our singer—Warrel Dane later toured with King Diamond, maintaining a good friendship. The guys were really nice and I was surprised hearing about how they recorded Mellisa with minimal gear. Seems much of the sound was due to the studio. Our bass player gave King a cross necklace that appeared in later photos. Thanks for making this accurate documentary! The memories return...🖤

Melissa is a classic! My favorite. I'll never forget seeing Mercyful Fate with Motorhead and Exciter in Rochester, NY. We got to meet the band at a local record store before the show. In fact they asked to follow us to the gig. We agreed and they jumped into their rented station wagon and off we went. The band was amazing that night. I can remember people flipping off the band. I'm not sure if it was due to the satanic vibe or what. It was magic in my eyes.

Don’t break the oath An all time classic and favorite
