Kham Meslien, ancien contrebassiste du groupe Lo’Jo, s’offre une aventure en solitaire. Et quel plus bel endroit que les montagnes de Cosmo Jazz pour prendre son envol ?
Kham Meslien a officié pendant presque vingt ans au sein du groupe Lo’jo – formation emblématique du jazz angevins, pilotée depuis 1982 par Denis Péan –, joué au sein du trio Sweet Back, collaboré avec des pointures de l’acabit d’Archie Shepp, Robert Plant ou encore Robert Wyatt… Un CV impressionnant, qui lui a permis de performer aux quatre coins du globe.
Epris de liberté, Kham Meslien navigue depuis 2016 en solo. Il a ainsi apposé son nom sur un premier album paru en 2022 et baptisé Fantômes… Futurs. Là, le contrebassiste accompagne son instrument fétiche de percussions et d’un charango, réhausse le tout d’effets, de boucles et de superpositions. Il donne ainsi naissance à des compositions au fort pouvoir d'évocation.
C’est sur le site de La Flégère, à 1877 mètres d’altitude, que le festival Cosmo Jazz a donné rendez-vous à Kham Meslien. Avec une vue donnant sur la vallée de Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, la musique atmosphérique du contrebassiste a tout l’espace nécessaire pour se déployer, prendre son ampleur. On plane avec elle.

Ce n'est pas facile lorsque l'on joue seul de cet instrument de proposer un programme complet, il faut beaucoup de musicalité et que cela "accroche l'oreille". Bravo.

I've listened to this almost every day for the last few days and it just keeps getting better and better. Amazing work, Kham. Update: This is still my favourite set of 2023 and now 2024, too. Update 2: Almost half way through 2024 and it's still giving me chills.

How civilized this outdoor musical event is. Makes me believe in ourselves as spiritual beings expressing ourselves amongst the programmed material masses. Love this music, the beautiful setting, spottet with colourful dots of people the eye of water and the beautiful beautiful clouds. Enchanting and casual at the same time ( the music) majestic and hurt at the same time the mountains.
