As the spiritual mother of God’s adopted children, Mama Mary’s top social priority is for those who are most in need – the poorest who are forgotten by society. The devotion to “Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados” began in 1409 in Valencia, Spain, when St. Vincent Ferrer founded the Confraternity of Our Lady of the Holy Innocents and the Abandoned to minister to abandoned children and elderly people. Today there are two major shrines dedicated to Our Lady of the Abandoned – one in the City of Marikina, and the other in Sta. Ana, Manila.
