AN AMPUTEE schoolgirl who lost a leg to cancer has defied the odds to become a competitive dancer. When ballerina Gabi Shull had her leg amputated she feared she would never dance again. But thanks to groundbreaking ‘rotationplasty’ surgery, the 14-year-old bone cancer survivor has been able to get back on her toes. Gabi was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in March 2011, when she was just nine-years-old. Her diseased knee was removed and her foot was rotated 180 degrees and reattached to her upper leg – with her ankle serving as her knee. Gabi was fitted with a prosthetic lower leg and took her first steps a year later. Now Gabi, from Missouri, America, can bend and flex her prosthesis by moving her foot and is now encouraging others to ‘live their dreams’ and ‘never give up’.

2:24 Notice how the ankle “knee” is way lower than her other knee here. The doctors knew that her legs still some growing to do. At the time of the interview she still walks with a slight limp because the joins are not yet perfectly aligned, but they will be by the time she finishes growing! That’s amazing foresight.

I had the same cancer in the same place. I was a dancer as well. What they did with me is cut the bone out and put a new one in and put plates in to hold it. But it's no working. The bone broke and they tried doing bone marrow but it's not working. I'm cancer free but there's still the problem with my leg not working. They've considered amputation but it's in my femur so it would be hard to get a prosthetic. Definitely gonna ask if they could do this or not. Doesn't hurt to ask. And I would love for my leg to not hurt anymore and to be able to dance.

Seeing things like this makes me think how grateful we need to be everyday for everything we have!

She was even able to earn her pointe shoes. Wow, no words- that's strength and dedication for anyone, let alone an amputee. Beautiful girl, beautiful story.
  • I didn’t understand why the foot was backwards at first but then after I watched more I knew why. That’s so smart of the doctor to do! 😅😅😅
  • THATS IS FRIGGIN FANTASTIC!! Who the heck thought if doing that?! that person needs an award!!! look what you did for this sweet little lady!!!

I am so sorry that she had cancer and had to have an amputation. But, I am glad that the foot rotation worked so well. Her life is full steam ahead, and it isn't holding her back. She dances as gracefully as any of the other dancers!

Who could dislike this? Such an inspirational story of a girl overcoming an obstacle.
  • Wow what a genius surgery! So glad she had a doctor who knew to do this type of amputation. I never knew this existed until watching this.
