I'm so happy with the direction they took for the sound design of BOTW. You make a great point that the music "breathes" and is never intrusive when you are playing the game. I wonder if BOTW2 will take the same approach or if they'll do something different?

I just really love horse riding in BOTW. It reminds me of my childhood when I used to do that and I get a big happy smile in my face every time the music starts because it's so quirky at first and then it turns into this nostalgic orchestra, gets me emotional honestly

    This video was a masterpiece.

“the manic dash to attack these monsters” 😂 exactly this. These words will forever sound when I battle a molduga from now on

BOTW is my first ever Zelda title so I wasn't even aware that some of the music is using old, beloved themes which makes me appreciate the soundtrack even more so. You've perfectly explained how the sound design in this game accompanies the character throughout their exploration and made me notice some things I've missed entirely during my first (and only) playthrough, as I've basically done the whole thing on handheld mode and couldn't have the sound loud enough often times, but this video made me want to go back to it purely to enjoy the ambience and music. Although the horse riding music always gave me a slightly anxious feeling, I'm curious to see how I'll react to it now when listening to it more attentively. Excellent video, it's surprising it has so little views, I hope the algorithm pushes your stuff to more people!
  • Omg ty for making this video. It is so in depth and I just find it amazing how much appreciation you have for the sounds. It is so calming and makes me appreciate the game developers even more!!! It makes me want to restart it right now 😍

Yeah I am totally going to watch all your videos today. My algorithm showed one of your videos and now I’m hooked. I love how fleshed out your analysis are. You sound so kind and loving and the way you describe this game and it’s music... you give words for the way I feel about it. Brb gonna watch the rest of your videos.

A song I don't hear talked about much is the dragons theme. It always feels so magical, just like coming across a giant, ancient, powerful, forgotten creature.

This video is fantastic, thank you! Most people I've talked to about this game have complained about the lack of music, because they wanted something more like Ocarina of Time or other Zeldas, where the music is constant and gives every location a very heavy theme. I really love the subtlety of botw, though. I love the nature sounds; it makes this the most calming game I've ever played. I also love the impact that music does have when it does come in, particularly when the dragons' theme music starts up, or when Zelda's theme ever so subtly makes a bunch of recognition/nostalgia neurons fire off in my brain :) You helped me recognize for the first time, though, how the "emptiness" of the soundscape reflects the emptiness of the world. That's cool, and definitely effective. The only portion of the soundscape I haven't liked is what you hear in snowy/cold zones. I don't find that soundscape enjoyable, and the game requires me to spend a LOT of time wandering around in it to get all the shrines, koroks, and monster parts for armor upgrades. It would be okay for a smaller area, but I think it just covers too much of the map. Honestly, though: I'm currently on my 3rd playthrough of this game, and still enjoying every moment. It's my go-to game to wind down after work.

Really well done analysis! You're quite observant! A lot of these things went right over my head.

I loved this video. If you go to the horse revival fairy, near highland stable, uptop the malanya spring you can hear eponas theme being played in its entirety. You should check out that area.

I can really appreciate the attention put into the sound effects for this game... I do have one major gripe though: the sound effect used for teleporting between shrines was the exact same stock sound effect spore used, and I played that game a ton as a kid, so it's extremely distracting whenever I teleport in the game. of course, use of stock sound effects is extremely common so I can't really blame nintendo on that, it's very much a personal thing.
