Homelessness in Canada: Toronto man fears shelter system but can’t get help without it

Peter Necheff was born and grew up in Corktown, raised by his parents to be kind.

He worked as a shoeshine boy, then sold newspapers and took on his first full-time job at 15 years old.

“I’m a Toronto boy,” said the 61-year-old.

Twelve years ago, Necheff damaged his heart and his kidneys by taking too much Ibuprofen as he struggled to handle the pain from work injuries. His cardiologist told him he’d have to reduce how much he worked, something he struggled to do.

Then, three months ago, the housing set-up with a roommate who had been with him through the pandemic fell apart, and he found himself without a home.

Sean O'Shea reports.

  • Canada is unfortunately failing a lot of people. It's becoming a cruel place to live. The shelters are disgusting.

I hope someone can help him and others like him before it's too late. There are too many hotel and motel rooms sitting vacant when people like this can occupy them. The government needs to create a plan and do something.

very sad to see this man, i pray for his quick recovery and hoping him to find a better place to live

So sick of our shelter system housing violent people in the first place. People need to understand that Mental Health and Addictions cannot be a excuse to be violent.

I feel you brother. I went from $100k a year to disabled and homeless. I have contacted minimum 6 MP’s, mpp’s.a nd every relevant ministries. There is not help. I have been on a housing list for 6 years and i am no closer to getting a home. In the USA you can go bankrupt if you are sick. In canada you lose your home.

We are a 6 figure income couple and had very little saved and not much cash lying around the preverbal". '...don't have $500 for an emergency" that was us. The big thing was debt all kinds of it, cars mortgage (although our home isn't a high price one), student loans for our kids, and of course credit cards. One day we just got sick of being broke and went total scorched earth and became frugal overnight. Paid it all off, it took almost 5 years but now we have no debt and this year our savings rate is 50% on basically the same income that had us perpetually broke. So for us it is mainly staying out of debt and watching our spending, at first it was a real effort to save in our HISA and 401Ks but now it's actually fun watching our money grow. No car or vacation or neighborhood is worth being broke or financially unstable.

I hope this leads to someone renting him a room in their home.

So sad Canada has gone this way ! Shelters are really bad ! Drinking and openly doing drugs inside ! Hate to be a family going into a shelter . I hope a new government can change this up big time . Only hope !
  • @HuskerFox
I have a feeling I'm gonna be there 1 day. I feel really bad for this guy.

This happens to more people with special needs than the public is aware of. Meanwhile, Real Estate Investment Trusts are destroying what used to be affordable, rent controlled, properties and the various levels of government are doing NOTHING to prevent the debacle. Doug Ford’s solution; build more houses, as though people living in rent controlled apartments are suddenly going cough up the down payment, and mortgage payments on a new house. Talk about being out of touch!!
  • I'm in BC I have 4 long term illnesses and I was denied disability, they say I paid for it but dont qualify because it's not prolonged!! I'm going to be homeless in my country born raised all my life here and they said no. Now I'm going to die sick on the streets. My country has failed!!!! 😡 ik in my 60s what am I supposed to do, the government is attacking its most vulnerable!!

I woke up this morning weighing the idea of going downtown to inquire about living in a shelter. Where I presently live I am scared to open the door, answer the phone or just walk down the hallway to go to the bus stop. It's not so much the residents that point out a rip in a pair of work jeans or the need for a haircut, as it is the yelling, intimidation and 'dirty looks' by the management and staff. It's nerve racking to fear the violent pounding on the door and to have the landlords walk into your place and scold you that you are on "private property", or have them call you on the phone claiming they are conducting an "investigation". People make mistakes yet incidents that are but misdemeanor violations by nature are construed as felonious. The sign out front on the boulevard says that it's "A great place to call home", but I just can't bring myself to use that word "home". There are so many people that have master keys to my door. I have looked into moving, but seemingly, prospective landlords don't want anyone over 60. It's not so much the fear of falling through the cracks as it is being pushed.

I am not a proud Canadian like I was 10 yrs ago. I have been refused CDP , My doctor doesn't care what happens to me and knows I have a disability. I have Spinal Stenosis and its put me off my feet, I can't work and am getting 900 a month and not a care that I am disabled. I can't move to a building with an elevator, but I can just barely get up my stairs...If I move to a more accessable building, I will have to live homeless . I am 58 yrs old and its a horrible feeling to be scared because you are disabled but treated like someone who is in their 20's with no help ! I need homecare services, but I am not elligible for it in N.S if you ask. I am afraid and falling through the cracks as a disabled senior. I pray this man gets help , he is in need, I cried watching because I feel it is NEXT for me. Prayers to all who are falling thru the cracks . Canada NEEDS BETTER HEALTHCARE AND SERVICES ! 😔😢💔🙏🙏
  • Its really distrubing to see all the negative and insensitive comments from all these ignorant people.
  • @sheilahall4732
Im so sorry and sad, that our people are being pushed out of places to live unbelievable
  • @Jspice345
Any update on this older gentleman? Breaks my heart. Truly what’s has become of this country. I hope he was able to secure housing
  • @kumcee
In this kind of circumstance, Canada is not a 1st world nation anymore and there is less and less hope everyday...pls ppl its scary donating to the person next door but its needed...the government gives money to other countries, not ppl here that need it. Our own next door...i need help...and there is no answer
  • @junehodsdon8037
Why isn't there protections in shelters? This has been an ongoing problem for over a decade. If shelters were safe, more people would use them. Why has this not been solved at the very least? This seems like a really easy fix. Step one. Safe places to sleep! Sheesh!
