According to the producers, they wanted to make Cathy more relevant, not just a spouse that Jack confides in. By making her a doctor of infectious diseases she can play a bigger role in the series, which is a good thing. Abbie Cornish is great as Cathy.

The only thing I didn’t like about this series, is that Cathy is an EYE surgeon, not in infectious diseases. As someone who’s read every Tom Clancy novel about Jack Ryan, That’s a big screw up lol.
