Here is an extremely memorable piece of footage where 5-time world champion, Juan Manuel Fangio, aged 66, races against Jack Brabham. The 4 lap 'demonstration' was run after the Australian Grand Prix at Sandown in 1978. With Fangio in his W196 Mercedes Benz and Brabham in his Repco Brabham, a car 12 years newer than Fangio's.
An awesome exhibition of great racing cars, pushed to their limit against one another, a special clip.

When you notice that Fangio won the F1 championship with FOUR different teams, you know it was not the car.

As an Englisman I have no qualms about admitting that Fangio was the best racing driver of all time

I was there that day, and saw Fangio close up with my own two eyes. Made that a "MAGIC" moment in my life. Never to be forgotten. Certainly in my opinion, the best racing driver ever, in my lifetime.

This was in 1978, so Fangio was 66-67 and Brabham 51-52.

I love these commentators, they dont freak out at every single thing that happens, unlike the current Sky broadcast that over hypes every single tire changed.
  • I was priviliged to see Fangio do a demonstration lap at Laguna Seca. He was in his 80's, driving a Alfa the 151 that he won his first championship in. It was loaned by the Alfa Mueso Storico and the tires were correct but had been sitting for a long time. So he drove several laps to warm them up. Then he drove hard. And this was a sight to see, I was at the tight turn entering the pit straight when the tires lost grip. The car started to spin around, more than once. The not so young Fangio managed the situation. No bumps no bruises to he or the multi-million dollar Alfa. If I hadn't seen it iI wouldn't believe it. The best ever.

This video is very, very special indeed. One gets the sense that had the machinery been equal, there would have been no contest - Fangio even at 67 was driving phenomenally.
  • This makes me feel so old. I was at Sandown that day. Probably too young to really appreciate what I was seeing but the sound stayed with me.
  • Wow!! Fangio's accuracy was stunning just clipping every corner apex and at the exact same point, lap after lap. Mind blowing to see him push that priceless classic 196 Mercedes to its limit!! The roar of it's straight 8 engine is spine tingling! Amazing stuff!

Fangio and Brabham the 2 biggest 'talents' in F1 racing. Both men from 'down under' Argentina and Australia

2 of the best F1 quotes ever were said by him.. "Once you are driving the engine turns into music and the driver becomes a maestro" "I dont wanna know about F1 anymore" (when Senna died)

no wings and spoilers, the sheer amount of skills to keep these cars on the ground is remarkable. great drivers.

Fangio says:"The way for winning a race is to drive as slowly as you can to finish first"

This video is an incredible piece of history. Two drivers from two different eras, around 10 years apart, race to see who is the fastest. Also I love how when Brabham realised that Juan was not joking around, he just went for it lol. Thought Jaun Manuel Fangio is such an amazing driver, he kept with him enough on the corners, where the Brabham was the best, and then effortlessly passed in the straight where the Brabham wasnt so good. Amazing from both of them

Fangio and Clark are my two favorite F1 drivers ever, and I never got to see them racing while they were around. So, this is a real treat!

When this demonstration was held, there had been 27 Formula 1 World Championship seasons (1950-1977) completed. Fangio and Brabham together had won nearly a third of the those seasons - 1951, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1959, 1960 and 1966.

I have tear in the corner of my eye when I see this great people of racing history. Fangio and Brabham together in one track - even just for show, is a big deal. Thx for that video.
  • There were many great drivers who have competed in the World Driving Championship over the past 70+ years, but even among those outstanding talents there are some that are just better, more complete, more focused, and truly stand to be remembered as the best of the best. Among those giants of the sport, men like Juan Manuel Fangio are at the absolute pinnacle. They were so good that the others were just inspired, and simply had to work harder. When I see these greats doing what they were born to do, it is a truly humbling experience. No one else can do these things, and it's absolutely an inspiration for the rest of us to know that such men lived and showed us the potential of the human spirit in racing form. JMF was called 'Il Maestro' for a reason after all, and I never get tired of watching him show us just why he earned that great title. It's a true pity that there is such little footage of him showing the world his impossibly skillful ways.
