Weeping Willow Bonsai, July 2016

Published 2016-07-11
Can I turn tragedy into triumph? Time will tell, as I am forced to re-design my Willow bonsai (again).
Check out the playlist section of the channel "Willow Bonsai Progression" for previous videos of this tree.

  • Didn't take long "JUST 4 YEARS" Nigel you kill me sometimes to a person outside the hobby that's a long time. Luckily I've discovered the hobby awhile back ago and enjoying the wait process of every tree.....except Ficus and Pine I can't keep those alive for the life of me.

Hello Nigel, I appreciate the way you keep it real, you show the good and the setbacks.I enjoy your videos! Aloha from Hawaii.

Thanks for sharing the good, the bad & the ugly. It helps us to all learn together. This isn't the 1st time you turned a setback in to something nicer in the end. There are many examples of trees dying off in nature (locusts, lightning, cold etc.) only to make a comeback. I'm sure it will turn out great.
  • Thank you for the wonderful videos. Today I started my first bonsai. I found a weeping willow branch in the park and it's now in water. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Sad to see this set back, it happens to all of us. I have had mine with an English Elm will share it after the Graham Potter series is completed.

Been following this tree for a number of years now. I'm gutted for you.
  • @MrTributes
this episode was an instant classic from start to finish.

Well, I am disappointed; that willow was beautiful. But a lot of old willows have die back on them, so I think your new effort will show lots of great character. Thanks for sharing your tragedy, and hopefully, a triumph.
  • Sorry to see the damage Nigel, but your positivity is awesome. Bonsai definitely forces us to cultivate patience! I think the tree will be even more powerful looking in the end and the twisty new trunkline is a great feature.
  • This is probably my favorite tree of yours.I can't wait to see how it turns out.
  • @dhalmjr
Love your willow tree, what a bummer! It will fight back!
  • These videos inspired me to grow a willow of my own, it's on its third year now and I'm very happy with how its turning out. Thanks for all the good tips. Sad to see such another big set back, cant wait to see what it looks like next.

Hi Nigel. I would love to see the progress of you re growing the willow. I think many can learn lots from you showing how to save a tree that has had a set back.
  • I started several Willow this summer. A crack Willow, a weeping willow, a Carolina willow, and I'm waiting on white willow cuttings to root. I also found a willow shrub, looks like a white willow hybrid. So I started my bonsai garden this year and have several Willow and rose of Sharon (hibiscus syriacus) just gotta mix somme bonsai soil soon. Right now I got most in potting soil. Your videos really helped me get started thanks for sharing your garden. Starting bonsai doesn't have to be expensive. Looking forward to your next willow video.

Nigel! I feel your sadness. I'd been watching your vids on this tree from the beginning, but it's not over yet. I've been waiting for your 2017 offering for our sweet willow. I can hardly wait to see the magnificent deadwood carving and the living part showing it's true nature. If anyone can do it, I have faith in you. I've often thought of you as the Bob Ross of bonsai. Think of this as just a "happy accident". I suggest another video for the weeping willow that could, please. =D
  • I was practically screaming at the screen to not chop off that lovely dead wood section. I couldn't agree with you more in that it looks really good! It will take that much longer but I think the new direction is a winner. Then again, I love the gnarly look, so I would like it. Good luck!!!
  • Bummer man. A good rule for willows is that they only put out leaves when they know there's not going to be any more frost - don't know how they know, but they do. Thanks for your channel!
  • @LANolan
Yikes, too bad! Good to see you still have a positive view. I was hoping you'd chop it back to that first branch! I love seeing drastic cuts.
  • I went through some of your vids, really liked them. I am new to this bonsai stuff, am planing to get my first set of seeds and start. It will take ages though. I was hoping if you have some Japanese black pine bonsai you could make a video and upload. Also if you would make a video showing how to get started with a bonsai, from the basics from the sapling stage.
