Long before meeting Shrek, Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) -- just named a hero for saving a woman from a charging bull -- is run out of town on suspicion of bank robbery, even though the real villain is Puss' friend, Humpty Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis). Though there is still animosity between them, Puss and Humpty reunite to steal a goose that lays golden eggs. Joining them for the adventure of nine lifetimes is notorious cat burglar, Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek).

The strongest aspect of this film in my opinion is that it is a spinoff that doesn't have to rely on Shrek, making it stand on its own. Even though the sequel was fantastic, I still like the first Puss in Boots and it's pretty underrated.

A great origin story for a great legend. This movie is pretty underrated in my opinion, with good comedy, great characters, and a great soundtrack, all of which The Last Wish turns up to eleven and adds so much more. Also, Antonio Banderas and Selma Hayek have great chemistry.

Puss in boots is the cat that everyone would want have as a pet and as a friend.
  • The original Puss in Boots is only okay but the sequel Puss in Boots the Last Wish is an absolute masterpiece
  • Something I find interesting is how for many years, this movie was considered to be pretty good, while Shrek Forever After was considered to be just alright. And nowadays, those movies' reputations are switched around.

A spinoff prequel film that can stand on its own two feet. Puss in Boots also marks the fifth collaboration between stars Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek!

This served as a pretty decent prequel spinoff for the character. After the Shrek franchise kinda finished after 4 movies, Dreamworks did get the idea to make a solo spinoff adventure for one of their most popular characters from the franchise: Puss in Boots. Which, to be honest I was totally down for. I actually do wonder what this character would do in his own solo spinoff adventure. I mean, this movie does have a decent cast, like Zach Galifianakis, Billy Bob Thornton, Amy Sedaris, even Salma Hayek as Kitty Softpaws sounded like a pretty interesting character. It’s kind of a shame not a lot of people like this movie, some thought it was pretty okay or decent at best. Either way, this movie can still be pretty good with Antonio Banderas reprising the character.

When I saw this movie, everything that has something to do in Spain. Because I visited Spain and every thing is amazing place to visit. I visited Madrid, Toledo, Zaragoza, Granada, and Seville. I wish I should never left Spain. Because it makes me that I home already. One day if I go back, I would like to travel to Northern Spain and see their world and culture

The music/dance sequence is titled El Diablo Rojo performed by guitarist duo Rodrigo y Gabriela.

And for the movie to end with a Lady Gaga song? Tops it off humorously!

The only thing I have a problem with with this movie was Puss’ distrust in Humpty. He didn’t want to initially work with him again because of what he did to him and his reputation. So when he asks for his help again, he does everything in his power to make it seem like he truely has changed. And then he stabs Puss in the back anyways 😢 blaming him for getting arrested when they were younger when it was Humpty’s fault for tricking Puss into stealing again knowing full well Puss didn’t want to anymore.
In the end when he sacrifices himself and reveals to be golden on the inside after everyone including himself was convinced he was rotten, it didn’t make much sense to me. He even initially planned to abandon the city knowing the mama goose was going to destroy it while looking for her baby. But no…. Everything was forgiven when he sacrificed himself to save Puss and the baby goose 😣
  • Fun fact: the Captain of the Guards here, called Comandante, is voiced by none other than Guillermo del Toro

Story of Puss in Boots from Shrek:

Background info on Puss: Puss is an orphan kitty and was brought into the orphanage by his adoptive mother Imelda and became friends with Humpty Alexander Dumpty and team up together to find magic beans but they couldn’t find them and when we fast forward to when their teenagers, we see them steal from people of the town and Puss wants to stop when they get caught while Humpty keeps doing it, when Humpty feels like he is abandoned by Puss, he tricks him into robbery of the San Ricardo bank so they get chased down by the guards. Puss wasn’t paying attention and hits the side of the wagon into a building so they fall off it and the wagon of money falls off the bridge into the water so Humpty gets arrested and Puss gets exiled from San Ricardo.

There is something very sweet about how "Grumpy southern couple in love" Jack and Jill are, y'know in a "they're both ruthless criminals" kinda way.
  • @gamemaster2819
I've noticed that the Puss in Boots movies have more nursery rhyme references. Humpty Dumpty, Jack & Jill, Little Boy Blue, Little Jack Horner, even a cameo of Mary and her Little Lamb. Not to mention Star Light, Star Bright.
There are full stories like Jack & the Beanstalk and Goldilocks (and of course Puss himself) but way more rhymes
