Italy's history is full of diverse periods and events, from ancient Roman times to the present. Here are some major historical periods and events:
ancient
- Founding of Rome: According to legend, Rome was founded in 753 BC. This founding myth is inextricably linked to the story of twin brothers Romulus and Remus.
According to legend, the twins were born to Mars, the god of war, and Sylvia, the priestess daughter of Vesta. Threatened with death by the jealous and dishonest rulers of their dynasty in a race for the throne, the twin brothers were abandoned in the Tiber River. However, being carried near the Palatine Hill by the waves of the river, they were discovered by a wolf, fed on her milk, and raised by the priest Faustulus.
As Romulus and Remus grew up, they learned of their noble origins and worked to restore their original thrones. Then a decision was made to build a new city, and a heated debate broke out over which hill the city should be built on. Eventually, Romulus decided to build a city on the Palatine Hill and began building a wall around it.
According to legend, while Romulus was defining the boundaries of the city and building the walls, Remus laughed at him and jumped over the city walls, causing Romulus to become enraged, murder his brother, and become the sole king of Rome. Romulus initially grew his city by taking in the surrounding surplus population - people who deviated from existing norms and laws.
This story later provided political and moral lessons to the Romans, and was used to establish and justify Rome's rule over the world. In historical terms, Rome was originally a small settlement among the Latins around the Tiber River in central Italy. This was a crossroads of various cultures and trade, and it continued to expand its power by competing with the surrounding tribes.
Elements recorded in founding myths and legends are mixed with actual historical facts, and archaeological discoveries provide a rough estimate of when Rome was founded, but accurate historical records do not date back to BC when Rome developed into a republic and began leaving records. It begins to appear around the 5th century.

- The Roman period in Italy was one of the most significant civilizations in human history, beginning around the 8th century BC and continuing until the fall of the Roman Empire in the 5th century AD. This period can be broadly divided into three periods: the Roman monarchy, the Roman Republic, and the Roman Empire.
Roman monarchy (753 BC - 509 BC)
According to legend, Rome was founded by the brothers Romulus and Remus in 753 BC. During this period, Rome was a city-state ruled by a king, and it expanded its territory by conquering surrounding areas. The social order and institutions established during the monarchy had an impact on later Rome.
Roman Republic (509 BC - 27 BC)
At the end of the monarchy, nobles opposed to absolutism ousted the king and established a republic. This period was characterized by organized expansion through a political system governed by elected officials, rule by law, and citizen participation in parliament. Rome conquered the entire Italian peninsula and emerged as a major power in the Mediterranean region. However, internal class conflict and the emergence of dictators led to the decline of the republican government.
Roman Empire (27 BC - 476 AD)
It was Octavian who ended the instability of the Republic, and he became the first Roman emperor, taking the title Augustus. During the imperial period that began, Rome experienced the golden age of the empire, or Pacus Romana. During this period, Rome enjoyed peace and prosperity at its peak, leaving behind a classical legacy in various fields including architecture, art, literature, law, and organized administrative systems.
