Nick Riewoldt and Joey Montagna discuss the holding the ball rule and how it's adjudicated in the game. Rooey is fired up after hearing Stephen McBurney justify Lachie Sullivan's "intent" to waste time on Friday night.

Could Nathan Buckley end up as the first coach of Tassie, Rooey is in full agreement with the statement and the call, plus where to for the Saints from here?

Nick Riewoldt needs to be given a powerful role in footy, one of the best minds and highly respected. Sort it out AFL.

Nailed it Roo, the rules and umpiring are the worst parts of the game, cant watch it when the umpiring influences results, the nplayers need to decide the results, not the interpretation of the umpires, but the rules need to change to help the umpires

Two of the best analysts on these issues right here (intent with time wasting, and the HTB rule). Thanks for the more measured take on the "Holding The Ball crisis", guys...The eye test is the best way through this. The AFL should commission a panel to watch 100 different cases of disputed tackles and use the eye test to determine which should be HTB, and which should be a ball up, or otherwise, play-on. They should then use the categories determined by consensus of the eye to retrospectively determine/structure the wording of the rule.

Getting Ross back was a terrible idea!! I feel the first half of the year was still how we played from under Ratten. Ross said it was a year of exploration last year and He wasn’t really doing anything just watching and letting the players play to see what he has at his disposal. Then as he started to coach we started to play poorly at the back end of the year and into this year. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Rarely disagree with Joey but do on this one. I see players have prior all the time and are willing to take the tackle rather than dispose and force a stoppage as they know they won't be penalised. When they are tackled they don't attempt to dispose. Just force stoppage. Christ they don't even bother with the fake attempt of hand balling like they used to because they know its not what the umps are worried about . Maybe just me but I see players all the time rugby league style grab the ball, hold onto the ball and take the tackle. Ball up. Broken game.
  • The added difficulty when you consider you have to take the player carefully to ground, the tackler has less opportunity to stop a late kick with the ball player more often still on their feet.. Maybe it’s time to remove prior opportunity, and pay incorrect disposal.. If ball players also have an arm free and hold the ball to themselves, it’s also holding the ball..
  • The umpiring in the Freo & Pies game was inconsistent in the extreme. With Freo players awarded 3 controversial free kicks in front of goal. I am not saying Freo was favoured by the central umpire because there were Free kicks awarded against Freo in the Pies favour also. Nick is correct the umpiring inconsistency this season has been monumental. The 15 metre rule is another blaring inconsistency.
  • Considering that Essendon have played the Tigers, Roos and Eagles in the last four weeks you’d expect their percentage to be much higher, but all said and done they’re in second spot because they keep winning games.
  • Silly rules that effects the outcome of a game . Penalties that gift goals to an opposition for various stupid reasons make watching footy a Joke !

Rooey saying hes not there to be an apologist for Ross Lyon is laughable. I kove Rooey and he will forever be a Saints legend, but he is kidding himself if he thinks he isnt biased and he 💯 cannot be objective. Roo got exactly what he wanted and was pushing for Rattens head for awhile

How about a bit of consistency from the umpires. Is a level playing field too much to ask for?
