In our busy lives, a few hours a week means time for a date, or a few hours of self-love pruning in the bath - so imagine what you could do with 10, 20 or even more extra time each week 🤯

Well, from reading some of the best time management books out there, these are my top 4 quick habits to efficiently manage your time, which save me hours each week 🙌 They are simple, but hugely effective techniques to make the most of our 16 or so waking hours a day, and honestly are some of the core techniques that allow me to keep up a demanding career as a corporate lawyer, while running multiple businesses on the side 👨‍💻

The key to these habits is (as with all habits) consistency… kinda obvious, I know. But with these habits especially, they really don’t take much effort, but they do require a consistent consciousness of how you are working. So, try to keep each of these in mind as you get ready for, and then during, each of your work sessions 🫶

  • I use the 30 30 rule when getting things done that are not deep work. Set timer for 30 minutes and only do that one thing for that time then another 30 for something else work or fun. It provides a window with a deadline so you don't get off task and you can relax for 30 minutes without guilt since it also has a limit built in. It is amazing how much you can get done with this without burning out or procrastinating.

    Game changer for chores. While waiting for your food to cook/water to boil, start a load of laundry and/or do as many dishes as you can until it's time for you to cook or eat. It keeps my sink clear and I don't have to stress about it building up later 😁

    Multitasking isn’t just ineffective, it doesn’t really exist. Ok so you can listen to an audiobook whilst exercising, but anything requiring focus you cannot split that focus - all that happens ineffective rapid switching between tasks.

    I’ve got about 10 tasks that need to be done weekly, but are due on different days at different times. Just batching them together and finishing them all on Monday has made a significant difference in my work week.

    My advice is to prepare yourself 2x times per day using a work diary and also update it by progress: 1. before work (in the morning time) to plan/estimate most urgent & important project/tasks, 2. while work: at least when running into problems or progress results to document them, 3. after work (evening time) to summarize/evaluate/review and ahead for the next day/week. I prefered digital notes as I work full time on computer, so copying already shown text into the work diary from work results saved me much time. This also helped me structuring my time and getting even through complicated problems, as it helped me recognizing & diffentiating new from old issues and their context and even get enough mental distance to details to not loosing myself and struggle chaotic.

    Something that helped me immensely was setting an alarm once an hour to stretch and move around (I would do two laps around the house). I noticed that especially when i had a difficult task it would make me think about that task and come up with more elegant/efficient solutions, rather than going with the first thought. I suppose it's kind of the same as what you mentioned of "just think about the task for 5 minutes =) thank you for the video. good work.
  • The multitasking example is also a good form of temptation bundling in which you pair something you want to do with something you need to do. It’s a great way to look forward to, and enjoy chores.

    The batching is something I am going to implement. I tend to multi-task on different projects and I think that is where I lose productivity.

    My understanding of 'Multitasking works by using the brain and the body': It simply means that when you are doing 'second nature' tasks with your body like walking or doing the dishes or watering the plants (everyone may have a some list like this), your brain is free to listen to or think about something else.
  • The different desktop example really struck me. I knew it was a feature before, but I could never figure out how it would be useful personally. Different desktops for different projects/modes of working = brilliant! I am looking forward to trying it especially at work. If you use Mac, i have heard of the Arc browser which does a similar thing (different "workspaces") but in a web browser. It is currently only available on Mac, but I am so excited for it to come out on Windows.

    The last tip is super helpful from my experience i have a menial job which i don't like at all i just drag my feet to work everyday and i feel time passes slow so as i am able to do this job on autopilot i decided to start putting on my earpods and learn french and spanish i would have 8 hours a day just constant learning and i think i will be so surprised by how far i can go if i just stay consistent and never slack off i think 1 year would make a huge difference
