Like you said Tom no propeller. The force of the water coming out simply pushes the boat along. Of course the water also cools the motor.

They’ve been around since the 80s as far as I know. Very common up in the northwest idaho and montana.

A lot of river guys like them on there jon boats for shallow water catfish the rivers here we sold a lot of them in Indiana

Very common. Been around for years. Great for shallow water fishing. I live by California delta. Lots of these motors. Notice the motor was not much lower then the bottom of the boat.

The 4 strokes popularity is fairly new ... I’m working on my 140 2 stroke with a prop myself ... the jets have there pros and cons ... one Immediate con is they are not as fuel efficient as a prop ...
