I use a variation of the last option. What I do is play the guitar into my DAW where I can add effects etc. I also have other tracks playing to play along with. The guitar is connected to my Focusrite Scarlett Solo interface, and the mix is monitored on headphones. From the RCA outputs on the interface I connect to an iRig Stream that is connected to my phone. This allows me to record video with the audio from the DAW so there is no need to sync it. As long as I record the guitar at the same time in the DAW I can make changes and then use the sync method to swap the sound over. Works great, and is really flexible. If you use Filmic Pro or another camera app on the phone you can also get better audio as you can set the recording levels. This avoids quiet parts getting amplified by the auto gain systems in stock camera apps on the phone.
  • This video was unbelievably helpful, thanks for taking the time to put it together so meticulously!

Wow!! you covered every aspect of recording using a phone. I can stop searching now after seeing your video. jCongrats!! You nailed it. since I don t have much privacy where my equipment is located in the home I will have to resort to recording direct using logic Pro and the video using the phone.. The main challenge will be to sync the audio and video.. Ill give it a try.. congrats!!

I’ve recorded two videos with the Roland GoMixer using YouTube as a backing track, solid platform. Moving on to a Focusrite 2i2 and Ableton with iPhone for video, appreciate the information in your video!

My come away from this was. Damn! The iPhone mic is amazing haha sounded great against all examples.
  • Great stuff! I use the Fender Mustang micro. You can bluetooth in the backing track from an Ipad or extra phone, and then plug it directly into the recording phone and capture all of the sound at the same time. Pretty awesome. 120 USD for the Micro, about 12 USD for the USB-to-Lightening converter.

It's hell when you are a guitar enthusiast that doesn't make money out of music but you like to put some videos of your covers on Instagram, and you are also very picky for the sound quality of your videos. You have to invest some money but it doesn't justify the money spending because is not like you have a fandom either, just some friends that like some of your stuff 😂. I'm trying to make magic with a lapel microphone but the sound is to high pitched and it sounds shitty when you're playing along some hardcore music in the background. Still, very helpful video. I was just recording with the built-in microphone untill this video reminded me I had that little microphone that could be placed very close to the amplifier.
