TransWA Prospector Train: What they DON'T tell you... Kalgoorlie - Perth

It is no secret I love travelling on a train. The Prospector is no exception. It is operated by TransWA in Western Australia to serve the gold minefields in Kalgoorlie from Perth. I get on one of this trips in the opposite direction. I did enjoy the modern, silent, and very comfortable confines of this train. But I got assigned a bulkhead seat, which silly me should have checked after making the reservation.

But, a little mishap does make good content! So let's jump on board and take a ride.

Please enjoy the video!

Righto... Firstly, Toodyay is pronounced too-jay. Secondly, the flying school operated by CSA in Merridine Airport has since gone into administration and liquidated during the pandemic.
  • Nice one Ryan. I got allocated the bulkhead seat too … maybe that’s where they put all interstaters! Keep the best for West Australians. 😝🤣 But I got lucky, because my seat mate didn’t turn up, so I had plenty of space to relax. As for the bakery in Merredin … it’s a very popular pitstop. They could make a killing if they brought a little mobile trolley over to meet The Prospector services at the station each day. 💰🤓
  • The one thing I missed out on when I visited Perth was travelling on the Standard Gauge so yes I would like to travel on the Prospector.
  • @LukeCrisp
Enjoyed the video Ryan! It’s been 13 years since I’ve gone on a rail journey (the overland)…then again.. plenty of high speed train trips in China between 2-4 hours… wouldn’t mind a couple of train trips in 2023. Just a completely different perspective of the land and being on the ground.

Hey Ryan 👋 Awesome trip report. Never caught a train besides metro trains. Great views I will say. Pity about your seat, but we all learn 👍 Meridan has a pub run by a lovely opely gay couple.. Or it did a few years ago, before covid. Superb report 👏
  • Glad to see that you have returned to making Australian train video, Ryan. I just binged all of your Singapore experience and the food reviews surely made my mouth water.
  • I remember being suprised that the British LNER trains didn't have water fountains like Australian trains.
  • wonderful journey I would love this, and only 96 bucks? That's pretty decent. but yeah bulkhead seating in that situation is not desirable. great video Ryan!

Really enjoyed this Ryan. (As usual). As you know I'm holidaying with family in your favourite west coast towns of Coffin Bay & Port Lincoln. Next time you visit Tumby Bay & want a fantastic place to eat give the Boys a try at the newly opened Blue Water Cafe on the beach. The guys opened just 3 weeks ago after moving from Adelaide. I believe they had a cafe in Port Adelaide previously. Anyway it was a treat. Some of the best Greek Food I ever had. They have big plans for the place. A little cafe that is going to be transformed to next level with live music etc. I'll certainly be a regular after I move from Daylesford Vic to Point Boston just out of Lincoln. Being the Foodie that you are you'll love this place!!!
  • Such a beautiful trip! If you plan on doing this trip again I'd highly recommend doing it in September, Toodyay is filled with fields of bright yellow conola flowers at that time 😊

I miss these type of journeys. I would go on a train if I had this option

yes, that bulkhead seat is a bummer and kind off negates the experience. The problem was that the seat was allocated to me and i didnt get a choice. Luckily there were empty seats elsewhere which i moved to and got a good view. In Kal I ate at the Palace Hotel and it was excellent.

Thank you Ryan for sharing, I really enjoyed your video , Looking forward for this journey , looking on April or maybe go by train from Kalgoorlie to Perth 😊
  • @Rheilffordd
This is an excellent video! One of Australia’s long distance train journeys that’s ever rarely covered here
  • Great train review always a interesting trip to Kal whether you drive, fly or train or a combination of above. Interesting you mention the earthquake Kalgoorlie actually had quite a nasty one back in 2010, a 5.2 on the Richter scale and caused quite a lot of damage to some historical buildings around town.
  • I love the comments about locking the door. That breakfast😁 So the XPT IS the worst long distance train in Australia......... Yes would love to do that WA trip. We have so much country. Probably not well connected but such beauty. An early Happy New Year Ryan, thanks for all the videos you have done this year.
  • I have been waiting for this video to drop! In recent days I think I've started the slow shift from aviation to trains as my fave form of transport. OMG my ugly mug! HAHAHA Love that you have to film the B roll and then walk back to get your cam rig. You slept through an earthquake! Noted, you approach dates like how you eat a chicken roll! The views are absolutely stunning out the window. This is why, when I travel air or rail, i never need AVOD. Another bloody brilliant travel vid.
  • Been patiently waiting mate, I live in Perth and the prospector goes past my house bassendean
  • @TheScratchingKiwi
The Chicken Roll! I thought those things had died out. Used to eat them (well, okay, throw most of them out) as a student. So awful, but all I could afford from the local petrol station.
