First stages of my Journey to 300 yards with a rimfire. Having never shot from a bench and rarely if ever shooting out to 50 yds I am learning all sorts of neat things. I’m just an ol’ squirrel hunter taking on another hobby.

  • Great video!!! I've also been finding my CZ 457 American (new this year and set up as a hunting rifle/hunting trainer platform with a Leupold VX Freedom 3-9x40mm 2nd focal plane scope) shoots superbly with the SK Standard Plus. My only suggestions (as a former competitive target shooter at the Canadian national level in my distant youth and admittedly using peep sights during that period rather than scopes) are: (1) to take a little more time to allow your sight picture to quiet down and stabilize after chambering a round, allow your whole shot cycle to slow down, and focus on your breathing a bit more - i.e. allow your breathing to actively become part of the cycle, breathing quietly and naturally for at least two full breathing cycles, and releasing your breath halfway as you get to the point in your shot cycle where your sight picture is quiet and stable and you're applying your trigger squeeze. To my eyes, the process is looking a little bit too rushed to achieve the kind of consistency and precision you're seeking, especially at 100 yards. (2) I'm not familiar with that scope, but it looks to be a 1st focal plane scope, and if so, I'm wondering whether your parallax might need to be adjusted as between the 50 yard and 100 yard distances. That also might be a contributor to your groups opening up to that extent at 100 yards.

Good start to the new hobby. Glad to see another video. Hope everybody is doing well. That CZ is a fine shooter. 🎯

Real fine pairing at 50 yards; CZ 457 and SK Long Range! Opened up at 100, but still Ok. Looks like a nice day for you! The squirrels better keep an eye on you!

Very nice. Those sub 1/4" groups at 50 were awesome. The 100 yard groups were getting tighter with each group and looked good too. The CZ is shooting well. Thanks for sharing. I posted a video yesterday comparing Norma Tac22 to Eley Tenex and Lapua X-act. Unfortunately I could only get a 25 yard shot due to the dove field has sorghum growing and it's in the way where I normally shoot from. I still have plenty more SK and Eley ammo to test, but I'd prefer doing it at 50 yards.

Have a CZ 457 Varmint in .22lr and is a great shooter. The Aguika Super Extra shoot well for me at 100. Also had good results at 50 with them...they are a great rifle! Cheers.

Thank you for sharing. If I shot that well at 50 yards and then not so well at 100 yards (no wind that I could determine, AND I have had the same results as you did), I might suspect that your results at 100 yards are due in large part to not ensuring anti-cant. Often times one hears caution to maintain a cheek weld. I re-establish my cheek weld (eye-to-scope position) AND check my cant position prior to each shot. As an after thought, be sure to calibrate the scope reticle to an anti-cant device. Some offer advice to set the anti-cant device to the scope housing (WRONG!). As an after thought... Was the 50 yd. and 100 yd. ammo from the same lot number?

CZ makes some great rifles, I have the 457, IMO plenty accurate for most purposes and a quality build. Personally not into the never ending search for better accuracy. Like the easily swapped barrels, I have .22mag barrel and will be picking up the HMR barrel also. Easily getting 5/8”ngroups at 50yrs with mine and cci std vel.

Have you done anything with the trigger yet? I put a YoDave spring in mine and have it adjusted around 12 to 14 oz. I'm guessing. For a mid priced ammo the SK Pistol Match (not Pistol Match Special) works awesome and a little cheaper and almost as good is Eley Contact. Have fun!

At 100, was there time for the barrel to cool off too much? I ask because I saw the 1st was low left and the 2nd was low right. then they climbed. The last group looked a lot better. Thanks for the test, it was well done.

Well it did good at 50yds. Not as much at 100yds. Which kinda surprised me. That SK Long Range Match usually shoots pretty good.
