This just convinced me that every EV should have 240V V2L. We need to be able to use our EVs to rescue other EVs.
  • You couldn't script such a episode. Memories of when I was 20 and helping friends in tight situations. Heart of Gold Kyle!

In order for the charger to work from a generator or an EV on board outlet, you need a neutral ground bonding plug. The charger is faulting because it's not detecting the ground and neutral being connected.

Kudos to McKayla for being willing to be the subject of scorn from random judgmental commenters in order to deliver this cautionary tale. I don’t know many that would be willing to do so. Lesson learned by all, however, so thanks to her for sharing her experience! This experience would have gone very differently if you had a Lightning instead of the Rivian! Ditto if VW had included a tow point.

McKayla needs to become a regular on the channel, or get her own! Really cool to see a normal person's experience with EV life and her personality is quite hilarious!

I had the same situation with no tow hook on our BMW X5 i40e. The tow truck had to use the same approach to pull it up onto the carrier. It also was a 2.5 hour wait for our tow truck to show up. The 7kWh battery was able to get us to the top of a hill for cell coverage after a rock had punched a hole in the aux radiator and drained engine coolant. The car software shut down the gas engine but allowed the electric motor to function!😊

Awesome job from Kyle - and learned some stuff too... not so great incident, but good info for the rest of us. Now to go look to see if our vehicles have tow hooks and points!

We all need friends like Kyle.

Sorry for all those troubles but glad you all got through it ok. I always see these kinds of events as good learning experiences.

Call a friend and have them bring you a Gallon of electric
  • Well, lesson learned: If you are being told by the EV that you need to charge and are near a charging station, go to the charging station, even if you only need a few miles. Don't put yourself in a bad situation unnecessarily. One additional reason to do that is, unfortunately, because of the unreliability of some charging stations. The one you're waiting to go to might be down so don't put it off.

Interesting learning moment in running the ID 4 down to completely dead makes it harder than ever to charge in cold weather.
  • @brandenflasch
Hell, I would’ve just hooked up the hitch. So weird that they would remove tow points.
  • It’d be nice to have a download once she’s digested the whole thing, as to what she should have done, but chose not to - so close to home - and yet she had the heat on when Kyle arrived. Make it something to learn from?

Kyle, you are a wonderful friend, and you have a wonderful way of explaining as you work, watched the whole thing with a great smile , it was a lot of fun to watch. Thank you

Stuck at a Chademo for 3 hours because we couldn't get the plug to release. New to EVs and thought it was the 12v. Ran that battery across the street to a auto parts store, but it checked out just fine. It was well over 110* F outside, let me tell you that was physically challenging. The charge station people were sending someone out and they showed up 2 or 3 hours later. But we had gotten the plug to release by running in and buying 2 metal nail files and were able to pry the button into the release position. Can't allow the chademo cable to pull on the plug at all or it doesn't release correctly. Been trapped 3 or 4 times. I spent an hour at a charge station examining it's operation and playing with tools to aid in releasing that button. Nail files, small screwdrivers, would work but we now keep an IC puller in the glove box.

Mckayla is learning her sisters pain listening to Kyle talking ALL of these tech keywords I love it 😂
  • @davidws5439
She learned a good lesson to STOP and charge for 10 or 15 minutes and that would save all these problems.
