COMING up the story of the #1 1985 smash Sussudio by Phil Collins. Based on a made-up word…. One that just fell out of Phil’s mouth while he was singing. Even Phil had no idea what it meant. Unable to think of anything better, Collins decided to just make up a meaning. But as weird as it is, this song completely captivated listeners. However, as Sussudio started gaining traction as part of Phil Collin’s 1985 blockbuster album No Jacket Required, it also stirred up controversy. Critics noticed that its central riff was nearly a carbon copy of another huge hit from a few years earlier. 1999 by Prince. And not long after, Phil Collins confessed it was a rip-off job. But the question was “to what degree?” The parallels were unmistakable. But were they enough to nail Phil Collins for plagiarism? Find out… NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

Hey music junkies, Professor of Rock, always here to celebrate the greatest artists and the greatest songs of all time. If you ever had to stuff a matchbox into your 8-track player or cassette deck in your car to get it play you’ll dig this channel of deep musical nostalgia. Make sure to, subscribe below right now. It’s time for another installment of our series ‘Career Suicide.’ In this show where we break down a song or album that took a massive risk. And maybe the gamble paid off. Or maybe it was a complete disaster. In this show, it could go either way. But whatever the outcome, it’s a guaranteed great story. Today we’re featuring a musician who by his own admission intentionally ripped off another artist’s iconic track and made it a smash… From the 1980s hit-making machine, it Phil Collins with his third studio album No Jacket Required and Sussudio.

So what song did he rip off? If you don’t already know, make your guess down in the comments. And we’ll see if you get it right. So when No Jacket Required dropped on February 18, 1985, Phil Collins was already well on his way to dominating the 80s. The two-headed monster of solo-Phil and Genesis-Phil would kick out a slew of hits throughout the neon decade. We’re talking songs like In the Air Tonight, Invisible Touch, Against All Odds, and That’s All. But that wasn’t all… Year after year, it seemed like you couldn’t turn the radio dial without hearing Phil do his thing and then do it again. Which I loved since Phil’s a favorite.

In the midst of all this success, No Jacket Required became the high-water mark of Phil’s solo career. No Jacket was his first #1 album in the US and would stay on top for 7 weeks. Internationally, it reached #6 in France, #5 in Finland, #4 in Japan and Italy, and get this, #1 in Australia, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the UK. Yeah, not a bad showing at all. No Jacket Required also scored Collins the 1985 Grammy for Album of the Year. And in 1986 it received two American Music Award nominations for Favorite Pop/Rock Male Artist and Favorite Pop/Rock Album back when people actually watched and cared about those shows. And at the Brit Awards it received two more awards, one for British Album of the Year and another for Best British Male Solo Artist.

Poll: What is your pick for the MOST ANNOYING Hit from the Rock era?
  • My 25 yo daughter recently picked up No Jacket Required on vinyl. She was so excited to tell me about it LOL. She's been a Phil Collins fan since her early teens. I raised my kids right! 😂

This channel has quickly become my favorite. It is like comfort food for us kids born in the 60's.

My favorite nonsensical word in rock has to be the pompitous of love from The Joker by Steve Miller
  • @megjacot
When I heard it on the radio, thought it was a stutter of the word “studio” and I couldn’t figure out why someone would sing so exuberantly about a studio. 😂

I work at a children's hospital. One of the kids I saw in the ER a few months the back was named Susudio. The dad straight up told me that they couldn't agree on a name for her and had "agreed" to call her that if they couldn't come up with anything good. Surely, they thought, THAT alternative will make them come up with something they can both like. Guess not.

Love Phil Collins!! Met him in 2004 with my middle son and he was gracious and amazing! Spent quite a bit of time talking to my young drummer (he was 10) - and then gave us tickets up front - and a pair of his drumsticks from the kit onstage! Always a fan!!

After my son passed, i couldn't listen to 'In The Air Tonight' without bawling my eyes out. But, I've loved Genesis and Phil Collins my whole life...I can't dance, I don't Care Anymore, One more night, In the Air Tonight, It's Just A Shame and Against All Odds are my absolute favorites from him. ❤❤❤ I love both 1999 and Susudio, never related to me they sound like each other...at all, which is weird since I normally quickly pick up on things like that.
  • Back when I was growing up hearing a Phil Collins Song on the Radio was about as common as It's a Wondeful Life being played on Television during Christmas.

"He looks like he's one of us". We all wish we had that level of talent!
  • I remember when this song came out..ha ha. It was always Madonna, Michael Jackson, Prince, Whitney Houston & PHIL COLLINS who ruled the airwaves in those days. Don't let anyone tell you different.
  • When Phil teamed up with Miami Vice in the opening scene of the first episode was brilliant and just added to his popularity.

"No Jacket Required" always make me think of a memory from my childhood. I had gotten it as part of the famous Columbia House "12 albums for a penny" offer. So the day I got my tapes, I listened to them all and, of course, being a kid I did not put the tapes back into their cases; I just left them laid out on the shelves where the stereo tape player was. My mom later came into the room and started to fuss at me and my sister about leaving a mess and not taking care of the tapes because we did not put them back into the cases. Me and my sister were just standing there, silent, being fussed at. My mom started to put some tapes in their cases and then grabbed the Phil Collins tape and said "What's this mean, 'No Jacket Required'?! This tape doesn't need a case? Why doesn't the tape need a case! This tape came with no case?!" LOL Me and my sister just started laughing so hard, reminded me of "Who's on First". LOL

I heard Susudio seemingly every day in 85, but never heard 1999 in it. 🤷
  • Never heard the "1999" similarities myself, just loved the song. One song you didn't mention was Inside Out, another great song from the album. Phil was on fire in the 80's, solo and with Genisis
  • I can’t say it enough how the 80’s was such a magical decade for music. So much was breaking out across all genres you were going to find something on the radio dial.
  • If you remember having your 8 track tape being eaten by your player you are old and will love this show!!! Loved most of his songs. I always thought he was saying "Sue's studio ".. good choice for a show.
  • @trinaq
"But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite." I love this quote from "American Psycho", the way Christian Bale delivers it is just top notch.
