Baby Chimp Born at Maryland Zoo Finds Home at Lowry Park Zoo

Published 2015-05-06
Introducing Keeva, a baby chimpanzee born at The Maryland Zoo. Born in March of 2015 Keeva's mother was unable to care for her. Now, as a part of a collaborative team effort between two Zoos she's found a home at Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo where a surrogate chimp will help raise her as part of their troop.

  • This is lovely but ultimately sad. I heard that the troop she was put with in Lowry actually attacked her and they found her dead in the morning. She was about 1 years old. Truly tragic

Why must people leave racist remarks?! What a very sad time we're living in.
  • It broke my heart that lil Keeva died in 2017. I guess the move was not good for her .. she was so cute 🥰

It is so important that she be put in a true so she’s not lonely but also that she learns the skills she needs to survive even in a zoo setting. For example, if she does not have the opportunity to watch another female have a baby and raise the baby, it’s more likely that you’ll end up and rearing her babies as well.

Just looking at this tiny chimp, I think it is a mistake to send her to a colony at this point.

So it wasn’t really what was best for her in the end? Or was it just the higher-ups making bad decisions again?

Why does she have to be separated from Abby for 6 months?
  • I think when Zoo raised Gorillas, Orangutan and Chipanzees come into season and mate, they should be given a (rent a new mom of the same species) before they deliver their own new baby. They are smart animals, but sometimes need to "see" what to do. Even a movie on the wall day after day could introduce them to motherhood.

So sad she has been killed by her adoptive chimp family

Wasn’t this the sweet baby chimp that was killed at the Lawry Zoo?
  • @judyross5929
U should have kept her with human just like you should all of them. Till they are way bigger and then a zoo or sanctuary. To my belief they may as well had done it theirselves
