Eric Clapton, one of the world’s pre-eminent blues/rock guitarists, once again summoned an all-star team of six-string heroes for his fifth Crossroads Guitar Festival in 2019. Held at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, the two-day concert event raised funds for the Crossroads Centre in Antigua, the chemical dependency treatment and education facility that Clapton founded in 1998.

Lyrics:

The thrill is gone
The thrill is gone away
The thrill is gone, baby
The thrill is gone away
You done me wrong, baby
You'll be sorry someday

The thrill is gone
The thrill is gone away from me
The thrill is gone, baby
The thrill is gone away from me
Although I'll still live on
But so lonely I'll be

I'm free, free now, baby
I'm free from your spell
I'm free, free, free now
I'm free from your spell
And now that it's all over
All I can do is wish you well

When I was a boy, my dad took me to a BB King concert in our hometown (the 1993 "Jazz en Nord" blues festival in Tourcoing, North of France). I was probably one of the only kids in there. At one point, he started shaking the hands of the people close to the stage. Unfortunately, I was a meter away, on my dad's shoulders. I reached and reeeeached out my hand to the King... But it seemed like he didn't notice me... Until he stopped walking, set his eyes on me and said "YOU !"... and shook my hand :) The smile on my face must have been larger than the concert hall we were in!

Let no shame be in your game. I am 85, was raised in this music environment. It has kept me alive when I wanted to die, lifted me up from my lowest points of life. I will play it until I can't.

I saw this live. About half the crowd left, this was after the Clapton solo set, close to midnight. Bill Murray was imploring people to not leave, best is yet to come, but they did. This was beyond incredible. What possessed Robert Randolph to do what he did.................maybe he was supposed to, but the whole thing was surreal. BB King told Clapton, Cray and Vaughn that if he had to sit they had to as well. And then they did what they did. Since so many people had left it was easy to maneuver close to the stage, the look on King's face during the song was amazing, it was like he was young again.

By chance I saw BB perform this song in Philadelphia in 1969 with a small gathering of 350 people. Not a soul was unmoved by the beauty of song. How lucky was I?

I shall be 84 years old in a week and listening to this song/music. And sometimes, I will dance alone in my study room while listening.

Does anyone else find blues extremely soothing and blissful?
  • I am proud that my father let me grow up with this music. I'm 26 today and have been listening to this music for as long as I can remember. Simply brilliant!

  • I saw "The King" in 67 at Northern Illinois University. I stood right next to the stage, which was only about 4 ft above the gym floor. He rocked the house. When he was done he held his open palm with his guitar pick to me. I have it.

This is the definition of a "jam session". And it's sad to say, there will never be one greater...

I think that slide guitarist stole the show. I also loved the smooth bass. Best thing though is how B B King loves how he's being serenaded by all those he inspired,
