A beautiful little documentary of village life in Gyimes, in the South Eastern Carpathians in 2018. Ancient, vernacular, small farm-houses line the stoned side roads on which horse-drawn vehicles carry logs, hay, stone and people this way and that all day long. Most people live by small-scale farming producing their own honey, cheese, bread, veg and fruit, milk and meat. Water is always from the well, pure, sparkling and cold. Cows and sheep wear bells and high above the village the mountain meadows hum with insect life while the extraordinarily rich flora remains untouched by sprays and chemicals.
Szekler people, Romania's Hungarian speaking minority live in Gyimes, which now lies within Bacau county. The history of the area and its association with Transylvania, is very complicated .... I am no historian and apologise for any errors I have made.
Enjoy the film, all taken with a little, hand-held Panasonic HC X920.

I love this style of documentary as you didn't tap the glass at all. You just let things happen. No show, no performances. Just life. Thanks for sharing this with us!
  • Such lovely, resourceful people in a beautiful country. The way humans were meant to live. Wish I could move there!

I was born and raised on a farm, now I live in a big city and I’m not happy I dream every single day to go back to the farm life.
  • Stories and pictures of my happy childhood when every summer I could hardly wait for the school year to end and to go to my grandparents in the countryside ... To be with cattle, work in the fields, gather hay and simply be a part of nature in the true sense of the word. From this distance I can say that this is a recipe for a happy and long life. My village is more beautiful than Paris :))))

  • I grew up in Romania. It's definitely a beautiful country. My parents were farmers. It's a lot of hard work. It's also not a life free of stress.

Well Well Well. what a wonderful documentary. I am Romanian and I would just want to say: I was so impressed by your film. So deep, so touching, so artistic, it is like a poem for this brave people, the Szeklers, a Hungarian speaking minority. Just to know for the rest of the world: The Szeklers are a Hungarian speaking group of Hungarians (Magyars) and they lived on this place for more than 1000 years ago. They are very hard working people and personally I have a very big respect for them. Thank you very much for this documentary, it is really touched me, a Romanian who saw my country form a really interesting and artistic point of view.

Can we hear it for the great relationship the Romanians have with their horses. As a lifelong horse owner, I know it takes kindness and trust for those horses to work in harmony with the people. I went to Transylvania some years ago and witnessed all this for myself. To watch people working together with animals and each other in such beautiful nature is a joy to see.
  • People spend their whole lives looking for heaven, or trying to get there, and a little slice of it exists right here in this documentary. I've been to Romania and some people would criticize these people as living in poverty, or undeveloped. When really they've managed to hold on to something that we have all lost . My soul has never felt more complete than when my feet are on this land. This video captured this Essence so well. Thank you for sharing...

I was a country boy from Serbia. My village was less remote and a bit more modern and agricultural. I remember milking cows, feeding pigs, running and playing all day outside. It was nice 90s childhood.

I love their way of living. There’s nothing to be ashamed of. I would love to learn their skills and live surrounded by the beautiful nature.

I am half Romanian but I was born and raised in the UK. I have family that live in villages very similar to this and seeing this video gives me nostalgia for when I last went, which was a few years ago.
  • I have been there last september, and from that time Maramures will always have a special place in my heart. Greetings from Poland to all Romanians.Toate cele bune!
