Seattle Public Utilities New South Transfer Station

Seattle Public Utilities new South Transfer Station will serve customers for at least the next 50 years.

Some of its new features include:
- Larger area to accept different types of waste materials.
- Reduced dust and odor due to a misting system that removes dust from the air and can be used to reduce odors.
- A rainwater collection system that stores water in a cistern to be used for washing and irrigation of landscaping.
- Automated weigh-and-pay station for increased efficiency.
- Shorter lines, a reduction in wait times, and enough space to prevent back-ups onto public streets.
- Increased safety inside the station for customers and employees.
- A separate entrance for garbage trucks for added safety and efficiency.

    Harzardous waste disposal is not talk about in this video. HUGE problem. Also no mention of electronic waste. What about... what on the table for more real change in a very real growing problem.
  • So I guess the tremendous costs in energy and toxic emissions to haul material 300 miles away is just an "externality"? How is a piece of Oregon so blighted that nothing can be affected by what we dump there? Nothing crawls across or in that dirt, no water flows through it to the greater water table, that air is somehow disconnected from the continental winds? I was hoping for insight on the waste problem of a major city, but all I got was the wimpiest propaganda.
