The hobby may be expensive, but it is far cheaper than an actual race car in maintenance alone.
  • @vampalan
Re point 1, it's expensive, one day at a track day will cost more than the total of the gear if you really beat on a car, then you will need to renew the tyres, new brake pads/disc, engine oil, brake fluid and the entry fee.. then the urge of needing to go again.. and you make a mistake, there's no reset button, it will cost loads.

I think almost all of this would apply to flight sims as well. I have an itch to do some sim racing and combat flight simming. I've concluded that what I want is more a simcade (new word I learned here) experience on a console. I used to do sim racing many years ago, but modern simming requires a LOT of time if you want to be competitive.

Regarding #5, imo you should also have mentioned desk setups and not only rigs. Assuming someone starts from 0, without a pc, desk, monitors, ok, you of course need all that stuff, but I could imagine most people who start sim racing already have played other games, so already have a "gaming space" they could also turn into a desk setup for sim racing. Maybe could have been mentioned as the "tight on space" variant.

    Overall good video tho

Thank you for this video this is going to help me a lot!

I bought a g920 just because of well how everybody hade one and says it’s a good entry wheel wich it definitely will do the job just the main thing I can recommend is to save a little bit more money get the cls dd ready to race bundle and slowly upgrade it with the loadcell kit and beter steering wheels and what ever you do don’t get the Logitech shifter the shh newt 2 is so much beter and isn’t that much more expinsive .

Getting into sim racing does not need to be that expensive. I spent 100€ on second hand g29 setup (wheel, pedals, shifter) and 4€ on asetto corsa from kinguin. Totally happy learning the basics with this setup and trying out if this is something I want to invest more time and money into. If I notice my self not enjoying the experience I can just resell the setup with little to no money lost.

Rule of thumb, if you don't already have a PC don't go overboard on your rig. Fanatec DD Pro would be the highest I'd go if you don't plan on building a PC. It's also a good stepping stone just in case you do think about going the PC route in the future. All the things you buy for it will work with higher end products like the DD1/2.
  • @Team_SpaceX
I regret overlooking the price and now I’m broke😅 Good vid oc!
  • @McSmurfy
I just got the thrustmaster t128 and a steering wheel stand (no space for seat setup), as I'll be playing casually on ps5 and not too heavy sim racing (games like crew 2, nfs unbound/heat, grid legends, dirt 5 and some farming simulator).
  • @raulmarquez9206
I went ahead and bought a Logitech pro wheel and pedal set with a FGT elite 160 and also bought the psvr2. So happy I just bought the right stuff from the jump and won’t be looking to upgrade unless new wheels come out ;)
  • @siloedspace
i needed this a while ago haha, god the amount ive wasted. patience is a virtue!
    (oc how are you?)

My simracing hobby started back in 1985 and will last to the end of my days.
Just on my 3rd just above entry level simrig since 1999 and $/time ratio is extremely low.
At present mostly at this setup:
    T300RS-GT + T-LCM + 2xT8HA + flexible NLR F-GT Lite.
Often questioned why I don't spend more, having borrowed much more expensive equipment on more occasions.

Answer is I'm having a fun, cozy and extremely pleasant time every single time with my relatively cheap mainstream rig.
Main reason is I relax, feels like my blood pressure lowers, my heart beat turns down, getting in the zone of extreme pleasure feeling. And by that way I can hardly be grumpy when somethimg unfair happens. Just laughing of the bizarre situations sending me off when it happens. And then onwards to next enjoyable moment.
Life is too short to get bothered. And now into my spine that thr obstacle situations is part of racing and is best delt with by emtracing it.
    Just like life itself.

This is a VERY expensive hobby...but listening to folks who actually know what they're doing (yes, even you Oscar 😂) can help quite a bit. I'm currently using my first DD wheel (I was a Thrustmaster T-300 guy for years), but I did it by being patient and waiting for the sale of the year: Fanatec CSL DD. I'm a PC racer, so the standard version was enough for me and I went for the BMW livery as it was as cheap as the standard wheel version. I use a cheap-ish Amazon steel wheel stand that folds up and that has a pretty cool attachment that allows for a racing/office chair to pop into it and hold it solid and it works great! This allows for a more compact setup which I need. It all works well together.

I'm more into dirt rallying, and sometimes I just wanna have fun (Forza series for this old guy). Full on racing games, like AC, IRacing, etc. gives me hives sometimes...I actually hate not the games but too many of the folks who play them. Nothing ruins a game more than the other idiots who play it, for real.

Great tips, Oscar, more folks need to know them BEFORE they buy a Logitech and curse it after using it for a few minutes 😂

As someone who likes playing gt7 its kinda annoying that there's no competition for the cheap console dd market. All we have is the csl dd. Moza would definitely make a decent bit more money if they added console compatibility since at that price range particularly gt7 compatibility is something people will consider.
  • @PeaceSTAR253
Space is a huge factor for me. I ended up getting a small heavy duty standing desk. A 34 inch ultra wide was the other good move for small space. Some people would end up with the desk set-up because they didnt want to spend the money on a rig. I didnt have a desk until I wanted to sim race. 😂
  • @tommydplayskeys
I don't have much spare time or money, so I bought a used wheel with table clamp, and pedals with carpet spikes. I like the driving to be pretty realistic but get straight into racing without too much faffing about so simcade is ideal. I started on some old Gran Turismo games but found out that even a pathetic non-gaming PC can run old games like Assetto Corsa, Richard Burns Rally, Live For Speed etc. My FFB wheel must be about as basic as they get, but without ever having tried a direct drive etc, I am blissfully unaware of the difference.
