In this fascinating documentary we meet the people responsible for the smooth running of a major international airport. Running Bristol International is a team effort, from pilots and cabin crew to check-in, safety and security. These people, whatever the weather, are responsible for making sure planes arrive and depart on time.

In this episode, safety officer Jim Callaway is on patrol dealing with dozens of rabbits and hares that invade the airport at night. Custom officers Keith & Gary seize thousands of cigarettes.

  • And you wonder why your things get broken in the mail chucking the bags the way they was πŸ˜‚
  • 13:14 Safety Officer Jim Callaway refers to the Air France Concorde Flight 4590 disaster, 25 July 2000, where the Concorde was destroyed just after takeoff due to the plane colliding with foreign object while running down the runway. All 109 onboard the Concorde died, with an additional 4 ground fatalities, for a total of 113 fatalities. I remember. πŸ‡«

Ah yes, the old "Just buy more cigarettes than the legal limit, we'll be fine" thing. Like you're the first to ever try it.

Tobacco/cigarettes glow orange on the xrays. Your luggage is marked with chalk then wiped after. Then they watch you take your luggage & see if you will declare it☹

Who would have thought a few bags of mail could create such problems for planes coming in and out with weight etc , I would be just chucking it on a plane that is heading in the right direction LOL

Used to watch those Channel Express Fokker F27's with their whistling Dart engines and EAC Shorts 360s come in and out of Edinburgh on their mail flights. Great times.

More drugs & weapons than ever before being smuggled into Britain, but as long as we catch those pesky smokers trying to save a few quid or a few people trying to earn some extra money all will be well.

00:14 ..."Safety officer (driving a van around active runways ) is starting his TWELVE HOUR night shift!" ...Have you ever noticed that jobs which require full alertness for safety reasons , have long hours which wouldn't be tolerated in other professions ... Police in UK have 12hr shifts .... NHS doctors work even longer before sleep ... a recipe for accidents ! 13:28 .... A dozing safety officer caused the Concorde crash . 113 dead.
