If u learn Malay, u can use it in Malaysia,Singapore,Brunei,Cocos island and Christmas island in Australia also in some malay region areas in Indonesia. But also Indonesian may understood some basics malay words that they still use in Bahasa Indonesia.
  • It's true that we, Indonesian, can understand what people say in Malay. However, it's still difficult to say it the way the Malaysians speak it. For me, I always enjoy watching movies/cartoons using Malay. Very interesting. So glad to know you're interested to explore both the languages.

Indonesia's accent is "intense" because they have many other languages and are also influenced by Dutch-speaking. On the other hand, Malay has a pronunciation that is influenced by English, hence the schwa vowels. When the Dutch colonised Indonesia, they made the Indonesians use Malay as a common language because Malay was the Lingua franca in Southeast Asia to southern Thailand and even the Philippines until Spanish conquered them.

You are wrong!!! Malay did not derive from Bahasa Indonesia but it is another way around.
  • @VidyaDahlan
Hi Jay, as an Indonesian I can definitely say Bahasa Indonesia is derived from the Malay language. The differences are in the loan words from foreign influences and local languages and the slight pronunciation differences. Day to day Bahasa Indonesia is also very different compared to those spoken in Malaysia and often confuse speakers of both languages. Many Indonesians who come to Malaysia often don't understand what they are saying especially when they talk fast. However many Malaysians actually understand Indonesian because of the Indonesian entertainment industry which is quite dominant in Malaysia as they enjoy watching our TV drama series and listen to our pop music.

Its prooving that Malaysian is clever than indonesian..Indonesian cant understand Malay language while Malaysian can understand them😂😂
  • @Dasa22222

  • @n3woon
As a Brunei Malay do you realise we can speak and understand Bahasa Indoesia and Bahasa Malaysia because we come from the same root. We also fluent in english and some arabic.
  • 10:34 yes you're wrong, is the other way around and Indonesian get influence by the dutch, Arabic, persian, Portuguese, English and local language such as Javanese, Sundanese and other that make Indonesian different from Malay but Malay exist before Indonesian as a language exist
  • @bobbyart2561
Indonesian comes from the Malay language, and then many of it has been adapted from Portuguese, Dutch, Arabic, and many slang words have been adapted from English and local regional languages.
  • @MbahMu9829
Both bahasa Indonesia and Malaysian language are all derived from the classic Malay language. But Indonesian changed the name and developed it further so it became an entirely different language. Malay also did the same but since Indonesian speakers are more in numbers and absorbed form their diverse local traditional language and its special status as the only official language in Indonesia its development surpassed the Malaysian. Plus Malaysian decided to named their already developed language in the 90's back to Malay which adds confusion even more because "modern Malaysian Malay", and the classical Malay are entirely different.

Tjoetjoe is indonesian old spelling. But how to pronounced is Cucu. C spelling as Tj. U spelling as Oe. Other words that in old spelling = today spelling (EYD) : Dj=D (in the past "pendjajah = now is Penjajah ) J=Y (Jang = Yang), NJ =NY (Njonja = Nyonya), CH=KH (Chatulistiwa = Khatulistiwa) Indonesian old spelling is called as Van Ophuijsen spelling is applied from 1901 until 1947 under dutch influence. Then it get updated vy Suwandi spelling that applied from 1947 until 1972. Then from 1972 until now we use EYD (Ejaan Yang disempurnakan/enhanced spelling).

  • @Hynari96
FYI Malay is not derived from Indonesia but it's actually the other way around cuz the malay language is a lingua franca that existed wayy longer before bahasa Indonesia and Malay is derived from a bunch of language like dutch, hindi, Arabic, English, and more! Me as a German has learned a lot from my 4 years experience in Indonesia
