so the preliminary report is "I don't know". why am I not at all surprised?
  • This preliminary report is in line with the apparent root cause which is the unstable load sharing between the two generators that were on line as the ship approached the bridge. This unstable load sharing could be the result of operator error or a poor engineering design of the load share circuit. It is a complicated subject. I hope the NTSB can handle it.

Talk to engineers and you'll probably hear what I've heard. Clients do not want to spend money on safety, especially safety against an unlikely hazard. This bridge collapse looks just like that. Back when the bridge was built, the highway people did not want to plan for a huge boat hitting the bridge. Have you seen the collapse? That bridge went down like a wet noodle.
