I kind of disagree that people aren't interested in long format content, that's literally what's thriving on youtube atm. I think different topics and content have different suitable lengths. I'll watch a 4 hour video essay about a 00s tv show or true crime documentaries in a heartbeat, but I don't want to spend 40 minutes on makeup reviews where 37 out those 40 minutes I'm being advertised and sold things.
  • We’re 100% repeating history. All the popular trends on TikTok were also popular years ago on YouTube. The brats challenge , 100 layers, Barbie…so many old YouTube trends
  • I disagree about tiktok being better for sustainability. Tiktok has mega increased micro trends (like that green dress) and increased shaming for people who don't hop on trends (like saying throw away your skinny jeans). Shein hauls of like $500+ get huge interaction. People leave hate on videos if a creator rewears one item too much. Mina le has a great video about it.
  • I think probably the biggest missed the mark in analysing tiktok vs youtube (in my opinion) is that either you didn’t think about the fact (or think to mention) that the tiktok algorithm is wildly different from youtube, and the cases you explore such as thrifting hauls or body positivity or properly disclosing ads are overwhelming to you because thats what u engage with. There are a huge amount of fast fashion hauls, skinny people challenge, and undisclosed ads in tiktok, you simply don’t see them because that’s not the content you’re drawn towards

Defeintly not, they both serve different purposes. I think tiktok is an amazing app where you can scroll endlessly, and watch video short videos. When tiktok tried to make us create 10 minute videos it didn’t work because we go there for short videos. We go to YouTube for longer videos.
  • @amyward8861
I think the hard thing about TikTok is everyone's experience is so different. Hannah might be getting sustainable clothing tips but that doesn't mean SheIn hauls aren't still thriving.
  • I think another community that just kills it on YouTube is gaming. Those gamers get hella views.
  • Is Tiktok really about sustainable fashion? I thought it was three week long trends and $500 Shein hauls. Maybe that changed, but it's also hard to know what's really a trend since the algorithm is so tailored to the user. It could be that's what you engage with.
  • I like how I can consume content via YouTube without necessarily having to stare at a screen or scroll, like I can go about my life and get chores done or play videogames while listening to interesting stuff. Maybe I'll get TikTok someday, but I'm good for now.
  • @emromy3189
Coming from someone who's never downloaded Tik-Tok, my preferred content is someone speaking about something they're passionate about for 40 minuets to upwards of 3 hours. Which is surprising because I do consider myself someone with a short attention span.
  • @Charlottec968
tiktok focusses on sustainable fashion... are we really going to ignore the hundreds of micro trends that we have seen recently or how normalised it is to do massive shein hauls with so many items pouring out of the box that won't be trendy to wear next week
  • @lilbich642
Now that I have watched all the way through, and for context I am a gen z 19 y.o.... I absolutely agree with your conclusion that Tik Tok does not compete with but in fact compliments YouTube. There are things I only want to spend 30 seconds watching, like funny video clips/memes, and there are things I can spend hours watching, like commentary videos. I think it's nice to have different platforms that cater to both :)
  • @KatieReads
What I’ve noticed on TikTok is that everything is years behind because of the younger generation. I’m in the booktube community and what we notice is that booktokers are talking about books that were big years ago because they are just now getting to the age to read them.
  • @BlindBabeBeth
Might be an unpopular opinion, but I have zero interest in Tiktok content. I devour long-form content on YouTube. ❤️
  • @KB-zb2he
I refuse to download TikTok, I don’t want to shorten my attention span. I enjoy the longer thought out edited videos. YouTube is my background noise on the daily but I will admit a lot of creators don’t post as much anymore which can make it harder to find content I enjoy.
  • @GoldenXBoots
Also, the crowd at TikTok is so young, people don't know or care about the ancient history of YouTube drama. So this space of TikTok feels new and fresh to them. Im sure we will see brands being held accountable in a year or two on TikTok as well.
  • @KimandKamJam
For someone like me who already has a hard time putting their phone down, I just avoid TikTok altogether. I don't need the temptation and honestly the stuff from tiktok ends up on YouTube anyway, so why bother
  • I will say, that I've noticed prices go up in second hand stores in the past years. I think this was happening before tiktok, and obviously there are other external factors besides popular media that causes inflation. But as a kid who was made fun of for getting my clothes at Goodwill, I'm a little bitter that it's not even that affordable now and tends to be more of an overcrowded hangout. So in general, I blame Macklemore.
  • @Una...
I would love to see a video on thrifting. How this rise in thrifting has rocketed the prices up to the point where those who can't afford sustainable fashion, now can't afford thrift clothes.
  • i will argue that in terms of body positivity tiktok is worse. like the amount of body checking that goes on there and the fact that there’s essentially an entire ed community on tiktok is very scary to me!
