Inspired by the Texas “deep freeze” in 2021 and winner of the Barbara Buehlman prize in composition hosted by the Midwest Clinic, this engaging work takes on both the breathtaking majesty and the volatile nature of the storm and its aftermath. Percussion instruments clash and clamor, whipping the melodic ideas from one section to another. Tensions rise and fall as the temperature begins to drop, before the music sends listeners charging to the eyewall – the most dangerous part of the storm. Almost as quickly as it came, the snow falls more slowly through sparse pockets of night air as the storm ends. Brilliant! (3:00)
