THIS STORY:

He left behind a wife and several children. Supposedly, he died with a fear of catching sleeping sickness, which would give the illusion of death, later to awaken in a cold, dark grave, very much alive.

According to the feature article, there are other legends about the tomb. One is that Smith had it outfitted with “tools for his escape.” Although condensation and plant growth inside the shaft now block one’s view, residents in years past claimed to see the tools along with Smith’s bones. Said one, “You can see the face of the skeleton down there with a hammer and chisel crossed on the ground next to it” (Marquard 1982). Another source claims that when Smith was interred, “In the corpse’s hand they placed a bell that he could ring should he wake up and find himself the victim of a premature burial”

The Angel face you see is the Haserot, named “The Angel of Death Victorious". The stoic angel is seated on the marble gravestone of canning entrepreneur Francis Haserot and his family. Holding an extinguished torch upside-down, it represents a symbol of life extinguished. Wings are outstretched and the gaze is straight ahead.
IN THE END, DEATH ALWAYS WINS. LEST THE FACES NOT BE FORGOTTEN...

This channel is focused on casually walking and viewing a handful of the thousands of forgotten names and faces at various cemeteries near and afar. Seeing their faces up close. And when able, telling the stories behind their names.

Most graves are unknown and lost to history.
Some are famous.
And some infamous....
....and some with tragic endings.

We don't have to worry about being buried alive to-day, the embalming will ensure that there are no live one in the box.

I love the fact that you give respect to those who were also in the cemetery, even after we die it is nice to know that some people will still respect you after death

In my home town we have a small cemetary that soldiers were buried in that fought in the Black Hawk Indian war . There is a General buried in it and his horse.

This may sound wrong of me, but it would be quite an easy job for the correct department to remove that glass and replace it with a clear mega strong new piece. After all it was the deceased person's wish that the glass be there. I'm sure they would have approved if done respectfully. Think about it: if your glasses were dirty, would you appreciate someone cleaning them for you?.
  • He was terrified to be buried alive so he decided to terrify the living instead

Basically, he's buried in a giant terrarium.

When my 38/39 year old son passed I asked to see his body before they prepared him for the funeral. In my opinion he looked so beautiful in death. It was sad yet peaceful and somewhat joyous. Of course then they prepared him for the viewing and my son did not look at all like my son. I preferred the way he looked before they manipulated his face and put the make up on him. I wish people could have seen him in his natural death state. I’m sorry if that seems morbid, it’s just a part of what happens as we pass from this life into the next. I’m so glad I viewed my son before they touched him. Yes I took pictures and cherish them.
  • The intense, blinding insanity that would overtake anyone buried alive that awoke before the oxygen ran out is one of the most awful things imaginable. Waking in pitch blackness, dead quiet, barely room to move. I'd assume most people would be able to feel the plush inside of a coffin and realize where they were just before the total insanity set in. Defies description.

As a kid, there used to be a grave close to my Uncle's house with a partial glass top. You could actually see the man's face. And he was buried with the axe he was using when a tree fell on and killed him. As time went on, all his features were obscured with mold until they finally painted over the glass top. We kids used to go look at "William" whenever I visited. I think the grave has been moved somewhere else, as it was in a farmer's field. This was all over 60 years ago

Can you imagine how horrifying it would have been if someone visited his grave the day after he was buried and saw his face through the glass screaming at them to get him out? I think I would have had a heart attack myself! 😮😮😮 Thanks for the great story!
  • @IndeedQuiteSo
To me the clearest view of his face is at 26:03. Left forehead, eye socket, nasal passage, cheekbone, and jaw visible. The right side of the face is indeed covered in moss. Fascinating that after all this time the line of sight this man wanted is still there. The sun has shone on the face of his corpse for over a century. Extraordinary.
  • They should honor his final wishes and replace the glass with a new piece !!! The poor guy can't see through that one !!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

The birds are having a great time. love to hear them chirping.. So cool.
  • I was there in the summer of 2021. I saw the exact grave you’re referring to. There is also a gravesite that has a small stairwell going down to where a little girl was laid to rest. The story goes is that when she was alive, lighting terrified her. So the family had a window (now blocked in) made in to the head of the tomb. When the lighting struck, the grieving mother would go down the staircase and read to her little girl.

The birds chirping the whole was through was absolutely beautiful and relaxing, I always find grave sites so peaceful not scary at all xx
  • Its beautiful how people take good care of grave yards thankyou
  • @reneeparent1596
It took three weeks to bury him? I'm sure they knew he was really dead by then. I have heard stories where fearing burying a love one alive, some families waited for some decay before burial. Once you smelled, you got planted.
  • @Darbysmommy
That first tombstone you showed the husband died 6 days after his wife, and they were both born on the 17th of their respective birth months
  • At first I could have sworn I saw a skull laying on it's side, then it looked like I saw very briefly a decomposed face. Then I saw nothin but moss. My eyes were playing tricks on me I guess. That window made it hard to see much of anything down there, especially with all that condensation and scratches. I discovered your channel recently I enjoy your videos.
