Hands-on with Tesla's Full Self-Driving: Worth It?

I recently got to try Tesla's Full Self Driving package with my newly acquired 2018 Model 3 Long Range . In this video, I drive on streets and the highway with Navigate On Autopilot engaged. It's much easier to talk about the negative aspects since watching it drive perfectly is rather boring. It's not ready to actually be FULL self driving, I think they have a few years to go still, but it's not as bad as many make it out to be.

Notes about this video:

- I believe the version of autopilot was 12.3.4. It was the most up-to-date version at the beginning of May in 2024.
- I keep my hands on the wheel, like you’re supposed to, but I am not steering or using my feet unless stated.
- The mode is on standard as opposed to cill or assertive.

Very informative video. I liked it.

The FSD is incredible. It's just not a practical cost that the average person wants to incur. If it were free I'd be using it every time I drive in some capacity.
  • Where do you live? right now, FSD is very good working in CA area. Also you will need to install V12.4 for better results.
  • @GizmoMaltese
Why are you holding the wheel like that? Most people just hold the wheel every once in the while.

I just installed the non beta update but my right camera is broken so can't even use it 😔

for me, FSD in it's current form, where it scares me the way it drives, it's not worth anything, now if it drives as well as i do, i can see it being worth $100/mo but i dont need to pay to get an adrenaline rush from my car, no thanks. i barely used it on my model 3 during the free month, and it left a lot to desire, it couldn't handle the simple highway driving with out several spots of phantom braking, it cant see well enough for the city driving with the position of the cameras requiring way too much creeping imo. maybe it needs bumper cameras?

FSD isn't and never will be a selling feature for me. I like driving my cars.
  • The driver seemed quite unfamiliar with the supervised FSD system and did not seem to understand that freeway driving is still using the older heuristic code, unlike the surface streets AI-based system. Much better videos are available on YouTube from experienced FSD drivers who are more familiar with and can clearly explain what is going on.
