"Stay!" "Uh huh, yeah, fuck you, I'm out." Classic. Here's the deal, you don't train a basenji. You can train humans that aren't good with dogs, but you can't train a basenji. With a basenji, you negotiate fragile, uneasy agreements. If you leave them alone long enough for them to get bored, you will no longer own shoes, furniture, or working electronics and everything you love will be covered in urine. They're horrible for single apartment dwellers; they require multiple cohabitating humans to keep them engaged and acres of land to explore. They will challenge anything that looks remotely canine to a fight. Having too much energy and freaking out is their default mode. Even if they like you, they'll bite the hell out of you if they're surprised. They will steal your credit cards and fence stolen goods on Ebay. They'll hijack your wifi password and post dirty pics of your ex on craigslist. They're horrible, horrible dogs. But if you can get past that, they're basically the coolest dogs ever. It takes a kind of anarchistic mindset to appreciate a basenji. They're super intelligent, and have loads of personality. And when they like you, they really mean it, which is more than you can say for most people.

I had a dog named Rocky who was a basenji & chihuahua mix but he looked 99% basenji lol. He didn’t bark at all even being a mix. I miss him so much 🤧

I don't agree that they only bond with a couple members of a family. We've had two second hand Basenjis and both bonded with anyone who they spent much time with.  Always very excited to see a familiar visitor!

OK 1. About perfect for city. They need to run around and get plenty of exercise or they get bored and antsy. You do not want a bored and antsy Basenji! 2. They can get separation anxiety when left alone at home. Some may take house apart when this happens. Totaly true look on Basenji rescue web site for info on this. I had two Basenjis and would not have another breed but not for your average person. Please check all info first. My second Basenji was a rescue one because people did not realise what they were getting. Love them but they are not for everyone.

Basenji is oldest dog breed in world which howls like to bring pack together same like indian pie dog or Pandikona dog to bring pack together and some dog breed such as lab, beagle, Bassett hound use scent to hunt whereas basenji, pandikona , Indian pie dog uses sight to hunt creature . Every dog uses first ear to hear then eyes to see and then nose to smell most dogs hunt boar.

I love dogs but I'm much more of a cat person. Could this dog be perfect for me?
