Red Dead Revolver is a 2004 action-adventure game developed by Rockstar San Diego and published by Rockstar Games. It is the first entry in the Red Dead series, and was released for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in May 2004.[1] Set in the 1880s, during the American frontier, the single-player story follows bounty hunter Red Harlow's quest for revenge after the murder of his parents. A local multiplayer mode allows up to two players to face off against each other or AI-controlled bots in free-for-all battles.

Rockstar San Diego (then known as Angel Studios) began work on Red Dead Revolver with Capcom's funding in 2000. During the development, Angel Studios was acquired and rebranded by Rockstar Games. After Yoshiki Okamoto left Capcom in 2003, Red Dead Revolver was canceled until Rockstar Games acquired the rights to the game and revived it later that year. The game received mixed to positive reviews from critics, and sold moderately well. A spiritual successor, Red Dead Redemption, was released in May 2010, and a third game, Red Dead Redemption 2, was released in October 2018.

Red Dead Revolver is a true "Wild West" story. Red Dead Redemption and RDR2 are not about the wild west, they are about the changing time between wild west and tamed west into civilization.

Red always felt like a Clint Eastwood type of character. John was like a Deke Thornton, and Arthur is definitely a John Wayne. It's nice how each protagonist references a different type of Western hero
  • When Red is mentioned in RDR2 I was jumping like crazy. So happy and what a badass Red is he is literally became a legendary bounty hunter in RDR series.

Fun fact: Red Dead Revolver was initially owned by Capcom as they were the publishers of Angel Studio, the developers behind the game. At first the game was supposed to be a more Japanese style arcade shooter, but after Take Two bought the studio and rebranded it as Rockstar San Diego, they reworked the game into what it is now.

I remember playing this as a kid, was shocked when Red Dead Redemption came out and everyone loved it and they acted like that was the 1st game 😂 only the real GOAT remember this and played it 💯
  • This game also had a really weird development cycle. It was originally a Capcom game but I guess they didn't like it so Rockstar snagged it.

In Red Dead Redemption 2, the player can encounter a man camping around Hennigan's Stead; he mentions that, before his brother died, he used to tell him stories of Red Harlow and will tell the stories to the player. In game files, the man in question is labeled as "REDHARLOW"

I like how gritty this game is. This was the first game I played that had a cover system. I also remember having trouble with the pig boss and the clown king.

This came out when I had first moved out at 18. My roomates and I would use the multiplayer duel to decide who would do house chores such as the dishes or mopping. Many a drunk evening having dueling tournaments. Good times (edit to add) You should do one or two more videos finishing up RedDead. This was inredibly nostalgic
  • @Yarsig
"I'm gonna make mincemeat out of you!" Was such a heavy hitting nostalgia line.
  • This game was my childhood. I beat the campaign at least 15 times and I 100% the game more than once. Pig Josh was no joke, and the duel with Mr. Kelly always gave me a hard time. Amazing story, wish more people knew about it

I just love that Rockstar used music from various Spaghetti Westerns for the score for this game. Favorite track is the whistling music during the train sequence which was taken from They Call Me Cemetery aka A Bullet for a Stranger.
  • You're right about one thing man. The red dead revolver characters do show up in the later games which they show up in RDR1 as playable Characters in the multiplayer and even the voice actors came back to voice them and you can make them say stuff as well. Plus the RDR1 multiplayer is still alive somehow.

Honestly how can you play this game without cracking a few laughs, def deserves a remake
  • “Heck yeah! We killed… Smitty. Smitty Werbenjagermanjenson, he was number one.” 🤣 I fucking lost it on the SpongeBob reference.
  • @Big-Papa-Smurf
It's funny, I forgot that I had actually ever played this game. In my mind, I mixed this game up with "Gun" and "Call of Juarez" which were both two similar western games that I loved as a kid. As a kid, I didn't really pay much attention to names or developers. I just looked at the cover art at Gamestop and decide to play. Good times, man. It's cool how the older you get the more classics you realize you got to appreciate when they were new.

the environment in this game actually looks amazing for its time
  • @kissfanbilly
I REMEMBER THIS GAME NOW. Geez, what a throwback. i remember having to redo the big josh mission over and over. Thanks for the nostalgia!
