Remember, when companies do these illegal acts it's a civil crime; however, when you do it, it's criminal. Double standards are fun kids
  • Why would the D.A. prosecute him? It's clear to anyone with common sense that this was a U Haul error. A rental car I drove to Las Vegas was ticketed for expired California tags. For some reason the vehicle wasn't towed. These rental car companies should be liable corporate negligence. After all corporations are people too!
  • Corporate accountability is as pathetic as politician accountability.

My daughter rented a U-Haul truck to move to another city two hours from the city she was living in. She and her friends loaded the truck, she drove to the new residence and had contractors help her unload and move everything in and she called it a day. At 9pm U-Haul phoned her and told her they needed their truck back in the city where she rented it. Her agreement had her returning it the next day but they insisted that wasn't true and would be charging her an additional rental fee and a late fee. Since she was planning on returning the next day anyway she hopped in the truck and drove it back that night just to get them off her back. That's one customer they will never see again and hopefully others because she shares the story.

So they basically screwed up, forged a document, etc. And they're still in business?? Someone needs to face justice.
  • As a former uhaul employee.....this happens ALL the time. Trucks, trailers, car haulers, etc get plates mixed up all the time. Uhaul dropped the ball on this and I hope that the customer gets compensated for it.

No question, U-Haul failed to follow procedures regarding their equipment, and they profited from this obvious error. They should be sued.

I've heard other stories about rentals and false arrests. It's actually a major problem. But the way big corporations operate now is accuse/charge you now and you figure it out. They've gotten away with literally robbing people that way.
  • They should have got millions and law enforcement needs to start holding these rental companies accountable as way too much of this kind of stuff is happening lately.
  • You're right, there are importance of multiple stream of income, unfortunately having a job don't mean financial freedom or security

Good job helping those kids out. They obviously did nothing wrong and got shafted by U Haul. I hope they got a very big settlement.
  • Thanks to KTNV for helping out. This type of predatory corporate behavior is overlooked all too often. How many other people have been taken to the cleaners every day by big and small corporations who condone such unethical unspoken policies and procedures.
  • This happened to me. I spent Christmas 2020 in jail because U-Haul rented me a truck and then reported it stolen.
  • I had a similar thing happen a few years ago. We rented a car to take my daughter and her friends to a concert. On the way home, we were pulled over for expired plates. Fortunately, the cops did not write a ticket. The car rental company apologized but I learned to beware of this going forward.
  • “It’s not our practice to offer comment on legal cases” Well, it’s obviously not your practice to check your vehicles or follow your own procedure, now is it?
  • Never plead when you're innocent. U-Haul's behavior is unconscionable. I won't ever rent from them again and I hope others will follow suit.

I've rented several u-hauls before and I have always been advised to do a walk around to check for damage before driving off with it. I take the opportunity to also check the plates and the VIN.

My goodness. Could U-Haul have been more negligent and incompetent?! I don’t think so. Add to that, forging the guy’s signature is criminal. And that collection attempt was just icing on the cake. SMH.
