A MIND BLOWING TRANSFORMATION

Published 2024-04-28
We’ve been running up and down our stairs without railing for about 2 years now.

Before that we were climbing a ladder from the main floor to the loft so honestly, stairs without railing were a major upgrade.

But now we’re elevating this space and really taking it from a build site to a future family home.

Follow along as complete our stair railing.

And now a little back story on us, in case you just found us on YouTube. We’re Sara and Ryan. We are your average suburban family, but 10 years ago, we purchased a raw piece of land in the Hood Canal in Washington. We’ve been developing this piece of property slowly, and this year we knew it was time to go all in. So we purchased a log cabin kit home and decided that 2020 would be the year we built a house on our property. We plan to build this cabin (as much as we can) on our own.

Unfortunately, some unforeseen events in 2020 that were completely out of our hands put a delay on our cabin kit being produced and delivered in the time frame we had originally planned. While we could have just waited it out and pushed back starting on the build of our home, we decided to shift gears and change our course for the time being. We purchased a 30 foot yurt, and will be setting it up as additional living space when we begin to build our cabin.

In the summer of 2021, we FINALLY moved to the Hood Canal so we could start the build of our future home. While we are building our home, we are living in a camper trailer and the yurt that we built in the summer of 2020. We hope to have our cabin kit home built by the end of 2023. Just my husband and I are building the house. We get help here and there from friends along the way and we do plan to get help on the roof but other than that we are doing it all on our own.

Follow along with us as we build our dream in the Hood Canal.

  • My two cents is put anything up so you can finally move in to your beautiful home. You can always change it later. I love it either way! 😊

Great job on the railings. It is always a difficult job getting all the gaps in the railings the same.

I think the spindles looks awesome, I am partial to wood especially in your house. Love the cabin feel.
  • Railing looks awesome,,Glad you didn't go with a cable railing!

The railings look really good. Just stain them to match the walls. You can decorate the colors and features in that way. That way if you don't like something its easy to fix!😊

Two major accomplishments on this video. So happy for you. I like the style of railing you have now I think wire would look too modern and clash with the rest of the house. Adding a rounded cap to the top of the railing ( or just round off the edges of a 2x4 would look okay) and some nice looking caps on top of the posts would look great. I think Sarah's idea of staining the posts a different shade would look nice also. Now lets get the occupancy permit 😊
  • I love that railing and the spindles! Works well with the inside wood. Very impressed which is no surprise.

I love the railing and the spindles. You did a great job. ♥️ I’m impressed that he can drill such great pocket holes without a jig! 😳

The rails look great. If you want different vibe then change it but I would be pleased with them as is.

We usually glue and screw on this type of fitting

I love the spindles, adds a lot of character to your home. Great build....
  • Love the railing it won’t be long now can’t wait until you all can move in then you all can say well done
  • I think the guy that helped yall with the metal in ur ceilings and with ur fan if he could help design a metal railing with u guys would be beautiful...Either like u have the wood or up and down another way ❤😊
  • I would definitely do cable railing. It does what you need for code, but also does not block the view of those windows in front of them. I agree with the other comment of it looking like deck railing.

Use Hickory branches they are as tough as it gets….would make a beautiful staircase

The bottom horizontal bars not lining up gets my OCD going!
